The Portrait of a Lady is a very appropriate title for the story as in the complete story, the author keeps on talking about his grandmother. ... However, it not only gives physical traits like an image, instead covers up the several emotions and feelings of the lady too.

A classical Chinese landscape does not stick very close to reality. It leaves enough scope for the viewer to use his imagination. The painting can be looked at from any angle and from any viewpoint. One need not see it through the eyes of the painter. The scroll on which the artist paints has white, blank spaces left after every painting. It gives freedom to the viewer to travel up and down. It captures the essence of the inner life.
A European or Western painting, on the other hand, is realistic. The painter wants you to look at it exactly as he had seen it. From a particular angle. It creates an illusion of delicate realism. The story of Quinten in the 15th century illustrates this point clearly. He entered a painter’s studio slyly and painted a fly on the artist’s blank canvas. The artist mistook it for a real fly and tried to drive it away. That story is representative of Western painting.

Life is a see-saw of pleasure and pain. Sometimes we get pleasures, sometimes we get pains. Our life swings between pleasures and pains. On the whole, human life has more pains than pleasures. Pleasures come now and then, pain stays with us forever. The happiest day of my life was last year when we went to New Delhi to see the Republic Day celebrations. It was a great fun and the whole city wore a festive appearance. The whole city was spick and span. Everything was neat and clean. We had got our seats booked in advance at the India Gate. We still went early in the morning in order to get comfortable seats. All ministers, ambassadors, other most important people gathered at the India Gate to watch the celebrations. Dignitaries had also come from abroad to see the show. Soft music was playing. There were uniformed members of the defence service participating in the function. Exactly at the fixed time the President of India arrived on Raj Path and was received by the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister had come 10 minutes earlier than the President. The Defence Services gave him a salute and there was a march past. The President stood to receive salutes of the Army. Navy and Air Force contingents. National Cadet Corps and school children also marched past the President. Some of the schools presented unique plays in the form of dances and they were really a feast to the eyes. Then the planes of the Air Force showered flower (petals) on the people gathered there. This was followed by jhankis of different States on the trucks. We had cultural shows from all parts of the country. Every State showed its culture and economic progress by depicting scenes on trucks. There were tribal dancers from Manipur, bhangra from Punjab, temples of Tamil Nadu, Trombay’s Atomic Power Plant, Ajanta and Elora of Maharashtra, and U.P. showed scenes of pandits from Varanasi. Lakhs of rupees were spent on these cultural tableaux. The entire procession went to Connaught Place and then passing by Ajmeri Gate and Old Delhi via Fatepuri and Chandni Chowk, reached Red Fort, where it ended. The ministers, the President and the ambassadors, did not accompany the procession. They parted company at India Gate. It took several hours for the procession to reach Red Fort from India Gate. This is altogether an unforgettable experience of my life. Republic Day was my happiest day.
