According to his earliest memory of his grandmother, Khushwant Singh's grandmother was a short, fat and slightly bent yet, superstitious woman. Her face was characterized by criss - cross wrinkles which ran all over her pale and puckered skin. She looked too old that it was nearly impossible to believe that once, she used to be a pretty woman. She always wore spotless white clothes with one hand resting on her waist to support her stoop and the other with beads of her rosary. Though old, she used to be a very kind and loving woman who truly symbolised pure serenity and was very fond of animals.

The poet highlights the ephemeral nature of human life with the line "transient feet with the sea".

These lines show the contrast between the unchanged sea and changing mortal human life.

Here the sea symbolises immortality and eternity.

With this the poet means that human life is never consistent and always has its own ups and downs.

Yes, they were very good friends because when both lived in the village. the grandma was one who made the narrator get up early in the morning, help him to get ready for school, served him stale chapatis, pack cardboard and ink and pen for him and accompany him to school and then both use to come back together and on the way, they use to feed some stray dogs.

When her grandson reached university, both of them were given seperate rooms. As a result, the grandmother started feeling even more lonely and she hardly spoke to anyone and spend the whole day working on her spinning wheel and telling the beads of her rosary. She even got more devoted into bird feeding which was her favourite pastime as she was fond of animals.

She has a calm, gentle and reassuring face. She always has one hand supporting her back while the other is busy in telling the beads of rosary. She is a saintly woman, quite religious and kind. This characteristics can be observed throughout the lesson, where the grandmother spends all her time in chanting prayers.
