In this poem, the poet asks the soft falling raindrops that who she is. It is strange that the rain answers, calling itself the poem of the Earth. The rain says that she cannot be touched and rises up in the form of vapor out of the land and deep sea and floats up to heaven, where it changes its form and becomes a cloud but its core existence remains the same. Then it falls back to the surface of the Earth to refresh (wash) the drought-filled land. The seeds which are dormant under the soil, grow (germinate) with its help. The Earth becomes vital and beautiful because it always gives new life to the Earth when it returns to its origin (mother Earth). It makes the Earth clean and green. The poet says that the rain returns to its birth place (the Earth) making complete its cycle. It does not care whether anybody pays heed or not, rain continuously does her own work.

Doris Doris Pearson is the daughter of Mrs. Pearson. She is a pretty girl in her early twenties. She looks pleasant but she is a 'spoilt' child. She makes her mother run after her all the time. She gives order to her as if Mrs. Pearson were the servant in the house. She asks her mother to iron her yellow silk. She expects tea to be served to her. She always thinks of her and her boy-friend, Charlie. Cyril Cyril is the masculine counterpart of Doris. He is also 'spoilt' like his sister. He is in the habit of treating his mother very casually. He asks if tea is ready. When Mrs. Pearson says 'no', he angrily answers back: "Why not?"  Then he orders: "Did you put my things out?" So he makes his mother run all the time doing one thing or the other. Mrs. Pearson Mrs. Pearson appears to be a timid and confused lady. She is in her forties. She is a devoted housewife. She enjoys serving her husband and  children. She is ignored and made to work throughout the day. In spite of their ill treatment, neglect and exploitation, she loves them all. In fact, for that she endures everything without any murmur or protest. We feel sympathy for her. We wish her to be a little more assertive. However, Mrs. Fitzgerald brings about a change in her personality. She helps her to become more assertive and dominating at the end. Mrs. Fitzgerald Mrs. Fitzgerald is quite experienced and smart. She knows some esoteric magic that she learned in the East. She is heavier and has a 'strong and sinister personality'. She is liberated, strong, dominating and bold. She smokes and plays cards. Mrs Fitzgerald has a deep voice. Her accent is Irish. Mrs. Fitzgerald is firm, solid an d result -oriented. She sets all the spoilt members of Mrs. Pearson's family right .

The author also went to see him. Ranga did a proper namaskar to him and the author was very much impressed with him. Ranga had his own peculiar views about marriage. He did not want to rush into it. He wanted to marry a mature girl. However, there is an irony about his views. In spite of having such clear and well defined views of marriage, he fell prey to immediate marriage, and that too with an eleven year old girl Ratana.

Ranga’s Marriage by Masti Venkatesha Iyengar is an interesting chapter in which the author and narrator narrates an episode from his life. In his village, Hosahali, which had many unique features, lived a boy named Ranga. He was to first boy who went to Bangalore to learn English. After his return the entire village went to see him; the narrator also did.   He found Ranga to be an agreeable boy; he enquired Ranga of his marriage plans to which Ranga expressed his views about marriages and preferences. The narrator planned and pledged to get Ranga married.  He knew a girl, named Ratna, who was an orphan and living at Ramroa’s house.   He orchestrated a meeting between Ranga and Ratna; Ranga was mesmerized with Ratna; but did not accept it openly. He falsely told Ratna that she was married, listening to which Ranga became disappointed and went.   The narrator now took Shastri, the village astrologer’s help; he taught him what he would say to Ranga when he would bring him to him. He cautioned Shastri that the meeting must look natural; and not as planned one. The narrator brought Ranga; Shastri acted his part well; he told Ranga that he was sad on account of a girl whose name resembled something that was found in the sea. The name happened to be Ratna. Ranga confessed that he was in love with Ratna and wanted to be married to her. Their marriage was successfully arranged. And the narrator became the godfather of Ranga’s son, Shyam This will help u
