The narrator wanted to undertake the same voyage that Captain James Cook had made 200 years ago. The journey started from Plymouth in England and ended in a small island in the South Indian Ocean in Amsterdam.
Along with his family, the narrator had been making preparations for this journey for 16 years. They got a huge wooden-hulled boat professionally designed just for this journey. It was also tested for durability and the family also employed the services of two crewmen to assist them.
While the first lap of the journey was peaceful, trouble brewed later and the family faced many difficulties. However, they were not afraid to die if they died together. In the end, the narrator and his family reached the destination safe and sound.

The colossal wave wreaked fatal havoc on the boat. It hit it with an explosion. Its force was so intense that it threw the author many feet away from the boat. But the lifeline kept him safe. It also capsized the boat; fortunately another wave put it erect again. Author's ribs cracked; his mouth was filled with broken teeth and blood. The decks were smashed; there was water, water in the boat. A huge hole in the starboard side let the water in in torrents. The very keel of the boat was shaken with the blow of the wave. Sue, author's daughter had received serious head injury. Their very survival was in danger.

For the voyagers on the Wavewalker, hard times had started on the second day out of Cape Town itself. They encountered a massive storm with strong gales. The storm jib was dropped and heavy ropes were looped across the stern. They also wore oilskins and life jackets, in case things got worse. By the morning of the next day, Larry and Herb had taken control of the situation to some extent.
On January 4 although, they had some respite before things got grim again. They were not afraid to die, if they were dying together. But by the morning of January 6, Wavewalker had came out of the storm and in a few more hours, they reached Amsterdam joyously.

The narrator’s family members showed exemplary courage in the hour of great storm. Not only the elders on the boat worked hard, kept nerves, and cooperated with one another, the six year old son, and the seven year old Suzanne behaved courageously and bravely also in the face of the storm. The six year old son Jon reassured his dad that he was not afraid to die if he could be together with his family. Suzanne also did not complain and cry about her head injury, though she was in pain.

In The Portrait of a Lady, Khushwant Singh describes his grandfather from the latter’s portrait that hung above the mantelpiece in the drawing room. His grandfather is seen wearing a big turban and loose-fitting clothes in the portrait. His long, white beard covered the best part of his chest and he looked at least a hundred years old. Khushwant Singh also goes on to say that his grandfather did not look the sort of person who would have a wife or children. He looked as if he could only have lots and lots of grandchildren.

Yes when the people are pious and good even nature mourns their death as the narrator's grandmother who was a very pious and a good lady ,on her death even the birds who she used to feed everyday had come and gathered around her shroud covered corpse in thousands. They also did not react to the bread crumbs put to them. They sat there without any single chirup till the grandmother's corpse was taken for funeral and after that they flew away quietly. This shows that even the birds were sad and came to mourn the death of the grandmother.

The two major values that one ought to take away from the story are as follows. Firstly, we should spend more time with our grandparents, keep in touch with them, make them feel loved and wanted, especially in their old age when they cease to be less active. Secondly, a life of dedication and integrity can be lived even without college or university level education as the grandmother demonstrates. The author's grandmother was constantly telling the beads of her rosary and she had been doing so ever since the author could remember. Her lips always moved in an inaudible prayer. She would start her day with a morning prayer uttered in a monotonous sing-song voice and spend the time when the author was in school at the temple, reading the scriptures. Even when she got older and more infirm in her faculties, her lips continued to move in prayer and her mind became lost in it. Her fingers would not stop telling the beads of her rosary. Her piety was a way of life for her. This is a lesson in dedication and perseverance for the younger generation.

The following lines would give you an idea on how to write a bio-sketch of the grandmother:
The story describes the entire phase of relationship which the author shared with his grandmother. In the early days of the author’s life, his grandmother shared a strong bond with him. However, that tie of friendship loosened a little when they both shifted to the author’s city house. She became resentful of the things being taught in the English school. Finally, the day came when the author was to go to the university. This phase of the author’s life was very painful for the grandmother and led to a complete separation of their relationship. The author got a room of his own and his grandmother led a life of seclusion. However, in spite of changes in the courses of lines, their feelings for each other remained unchanged. Even when he was leaving to go abroad, she didn’t display any emotion but prayed continuously. Same was her reaction when the author came back after five years.

Co dependence of animals on human beings
Explanation:
Since hundreds of years all over the world. There are people who are animal lovers. We keep different animals as pet.You may keep birds like parrot, pigeon etc also as pets.It depends on your choice which animal or bird you like.
But among all these animals, the dogs are most trustable animals.
Dogs are more human friendly and respond quicker than other animals.A dog always protects his master and his family from enemies.
But then there are various other animals who are not friendly towards humans. They always attack humans.

The age of twelve, the poet’s mother was considered as a big girl. The photograph shows the poet's mother and her two cousins holding hands wearing swimming costumes and ready to dive into the sea.
They all are wearing quaint dresses that were a thing of the past and not worn anymore. This was the difference. All have changed in the poet’s time except the sea.

The grandmother had love and compassion even for animals. In the village she fed the street dogs. In the city she took to feeding the sparrows. She would sit in the verandah. She would break the bread into small bits. She used to throw the crumbs to the sparrows. Hundreds of sparrows would gather around her. Some of them perched on her legs and shoulders. She never shoo’d them away. It was the happiest half-hour of the afternoon for her.
The sparrows paid their silent tribute on her death. They gathered around her dead body. They were in the mourning mood. They didn’t chirrup as usual. Nor did they take any notice of the crumbs of bread thrown to them. They flew away silently when her dead-body was carried off on a wooden stretcher for cremation. In this way, they paid their silent love and tribute to the grand old lady.
