A molecule is formed when two or more atoms join together chemically. A compound is a molecule that contains at least two different elements. All compounds are molecules but not all molecules are compounds.

Molecular hydrogen (H2), molecular oxygen (O2) and molecular nitrogen (N2) are not compounds because each is composed of a single element. Water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) are compounds because each is made from more than one element.

In Carbon dioxide molecule, Carbon shares its four valence electrons with oxygen. Because there are no lone pair electrons left on carbon it is a linear structure and has no dipole as the dipole of the two C=O bonds cancel each other out. The EN arrows point towards Oxygen. The arrows are opposite of each other and have the same EN difference (symmetrical geometry). Therefore, we have no net charge and the molecule is non-polar.In SO2, Sulfur has 6 valence electrons, two more than Carbon. It is a bent molecule, existing as a resonance structure, with a lonepair of electrons on the S. The molecule has an S-O single bond and an S=O double bond. The molecule is trigonal planar because there are three electron domains around the central sulfur atom. The bond dipoles moments do not cancel out each other. It hasa dipole moment which is vector sum of all the bond moments (non-symmetrical geometry) and the molecule is polar.

In so2 dipole moment direction is from oxygen to sulphur because sulphur is highly positive then oxygen so it attract electrons towards it so sulphur become negative but in co2 dipole moment direction is from carbon to oxygen because oxygen has more proton than carbon so oxygen attract electrons towards it so oxygen become negative this is difference between so2 and co2
