Lungs are the chief centres of the respiration in humans and other vertebrates. They are located in the thoracic cavity of the chest near the backbone and on either side of the heart. They are the pair of large, spongy organs, mainly involved in the exchange of gases between the blood and the air. Compared to the left lung, the right lung is quite bigger and heavier.

Systematics is the study of diversity and interrelationships between organisms, both extinct and extant. It also deals with classification of living beings. Fields of systematics differ according to various authors. Some authors classify three fields of systemics : Taxonomy, Classification and Phylogeny. According to other authors, these are Numerical Systematics, Biochemical Systematics and Experimental Systematics.

Chromosome are composed of thin chromatin threads called chromatin fibers. Each species has a definite chromosome number, represented by 2n. Somatic cells contains two copies of each chromosomes, which are identical in morphology, gene content and gene order and they are known as homologous chromosomes.

The transmission of characteristics from parents to offspring is called heredity, and the characteristics that are inherited can be predicted. Reginald Punnett contributed much to the science of genetics when he designed a method of predicting traits as he was studying poultry genetics. Looking more like one parent or the other is dependent on the gene versions each parent has. And which ones happen to get passed down. We have two copies of each of our chromosomes and so have two copies of each of our genes.

Chromosomes are the rod-shaped ,filamentous bodies present in the nucleus, which become visible during cell division. They are carriers of the gene or unit of heredity. There are four main types of chromosomes: metacentric, submetacentric, acrocentric, and telocentric. Chromosomes are found within the nucleus of most living cells and consist of DNA that is tightly wound into thread-like structures.

Under a microscope, plant cells from the same source will have a uniform size and shape. Beneath a plant cell's cell wall is a cell membrane. An animal cell also contains a cell membrane to keep all the organelles and cytoplasm contained, but it lacks a cell wall. A difference between plant cells and animal cells is that most animal cells are round whereas most plant cells are rectangular. Plant cells have a rigid cell wall that surrounds the cell membrane. Animal cells do not have a cell wall.

A plasmid is usually a circular (sometimes linear) piece of double-stranded DNA found in bacteria that is different from bacterium’s chromosome. It carries non-essential genes that can augment a bacterium’s ability to survive in certain circumstances.
For example, plasmids carry genes that enable a bacterium to metabolise a certain type of nutrient otherwise it cannot enable to conjugate. Plasmids are used for a vast variety of experiments from expressing human genes in bacterial cells to DNA sequencing.

A somatic cell is any cell of the body except sperm and egg cells. Somatic cells are diploid, meaning that they contain two sets of chromosomes, one inherited from each parent. Mutations in somatic cells can affect the individual, but they are not passed on to offspring.

A large variety of plants, animals, and microbes found on earth and they differ in size, shape, colour, habitat, and many other characteristics. So, studying each of them is impossible. Therefore, scientists have devised mechanisms to classify all living organisms on certain rules and principles that allow identification, nomenclature, and finally classification of an organism.
For example, based on presence of three pairs of legs and 2 pairs of wings, an organism is identified as an insect, it will be given a scientific name and then grouped with other similar organisms. Thus, various groups or taxon include organisms based on their similarity and differences.
Therefore, the biological classification helps in revealing the relationship between various organisms. It also helps in making study of organisms easy and organized.

The epidermis is an outer protective covering tissue of plant roots, leaves, and stems of nonwoody plants. It contains closely packed epidermal cells.
Modifications of epidermis of roots, stem and leaves:
- Walls of epidermal cells are covered with a waxy cuticle to minimise water loss and protect against bacteria.
- In roots, certain epidermal cells are modified into root hairs that increase surface area of the root for absorption of water and minerals and help to anchor the plant firmly in place.
- Protective hairs of a different nature are produced by epidermal cells of stems and leaves.
- Epidermal cells may be modified as glands that secrete protective substances of various types.
- In leaves, particularly the lower epidermis, specialized epidermal cells (guard cells) form microscopic pores (stomata) and regulate gas exchange between interior and exterior of a leaf.
The roots, stem and leaves of plants are modified for storage of food or protection to the plant.
