Osmoregulation is the process by which an organism regulates the water balance in its body and maintains the homeostasis of the body. It includes controlling excess water loss or gain and maintaining the fluid balance and the osmotic concentration, that is, the concentration of electrolytes. It ensures that the fluids in the body do not get too diluted or concentrated.

Double fertilization is a characteristic feature of flowering plants. In the process of double fertilization out of the two sperm nucleus, one sperm nucleus fuses with the egg nucleus to form an embryo ( process is called syngamy) and another fuses with polar nuclei to form endosperm ( process is called triple fusion). Since two kinds of fusion—syngamy and triple fusion—take place, the process is known as double fertilisation.

Economic importance of gymnosperms: Gymnospermous plants are widely used as ornamentals. Many conifers such as pine, cedar, etc., are sources of the soft wood used in construction and packing. Medicinal uses: An anticancer drug Taxol is obtained from Taxus. Many species of Ephedraproduce ephedrine, which can be used in the treatment of asthma and bronchitis. The seeds of Pinus gerardiana are edible. Resins are used commercially for manufacturing sealing waxes and water-proof paints. A type of resin known as turpentine is obtained from various species of Pinus.

Xanthophylls are a class of oxygen-containing carotenoid pigments,4 responsible for the color of many of the yellow, orange, and red hues of flowers, fruits, vegetables (corn, pepper, etc.), egg yolks, and feathers, shells, or flesh of many animal species (flamingo, canary, shrimp, lobster, chicken, or salmonids). Non-photochemical quenching is one of the main ways of protecting against photoinhibition. In higher plants, there are three carotenoid pigments that are active in the xanthophyll cycle: violaxanthin, antheraxanthin, and zeaxanthin.

Green glands, also called as antennal or maxillary glands, help carry out excretory functions in crayfish. These glands act much like kidneys in humans and help crayfish remain healthy by eliminating toxic substances and waste products in their urinary and circulatory systems.
In many higher crustaceans the excretory glands are located in the head. They are called antennal glands or maxillary glands, depending on whether they open at the base of the antennae or at the maxillae. If the tubule adjacent to the excretory pore is green, the gland is called a green gland.

Methanogens are responsible for the methane in the belches of ruminants and in the flatulence in humans. Methanogens play a vital ecological role in anaerobic environments by removing excess hydrogen and fermentation products produced by other forms of anaerobic respiration. Methanogens are obligate anaerobic Archaea that produce energy from the biosynthesis of methane. These lithotrophic microorganisms are widely distributed in oxygen-free environments and participate actively in the carbon cycle.
