In the Gudem Hills of Andhra Pradesh,a millitant guerrilla movement spread in early 1920's.Here the colonial government had closed large forest areas, preventing people from entering the forest to graze their cattle,or to collect fuel Wood and fruits. This enraged the hill people. Not only were their livelihoods affected but they felt their traditional rights were being denied. When the government began forcing then to contribute begar for road building, the hill people revolted.The person to lead them was Alluri Sitaram Raju.The Gudem rebels attacked police stations, attempted to kill British officials and carried on guerilla warfare for achieving swaraj. Raju was captured and executed in 1924.

NREGA 2005 provides 100 days assured employment every year to every rural household in 200 districts.Later it was extended to 600 districts.One third of the proposed jobs would be reserved for women.Under the program if an applicant is not provided employment with in fifteen days he will be entitled to a daily unemployment allowance.
