The first world war ended with the defeat of the ottoman Turkey. There were rumours that a harsh peace treaty was going to be imposed on the Ottoman emperor. The Sultan was deprived of real authorities even over those teritorries which was left under his control. This angered the muslims in India. To defend the power of Khalifa and to avert the harsh peace treaty on Ottoman Turkey , the khilafat movement was unitedly launched by Mohommad Ali and Shaukat Ali along with the cooperation of Mahatma Gandhi.Gandhiji saw this an opportunity to bring Hindus and Muslims under the umbrella of a unified national movement, as for the integration of the country.
