In April 1942, the Cripps mission failed. Within less than four months, the third great mass struggle of the Indian people for freedom started. This struggle is known as the Quit India movement. On 8 August 1942, The All India Congress Committee, at a meeting in Bombay, passed a resolution. This resolution declared that the immediate ending of the British rule in India was an urgent necessity for the sake of India and for the success of the cause of freedom and democracy, for which the countries of the United Nations were fighting against fascist Germany, Italy and Japan. The resolution called for the withdrawal of the British power from India. Once free, it said, India with all her resources would join the war on the side of those countries who were struggling against fascist and imperialist aggression.

The Protestant Reformation movement arose in Europe in reaction to the abuses of privilege by the Catholic church. For centuries, the Catholic church had acquired a monopoly over religion in Europe. As a result, it had become highly corrupt. Church officials used to extract money from the common people of Europe through taxes and other means like the sale of indulgences and used this money to live a life of luxury. The Catholic church had moved far away from the ideals of Jesus of living a life of poverty and dedication to the service of the people.
The Protestant reformation arose in 1517 when Martin Luther published his criticism of the Catholic church in Wittenberg, Germany. Luther was a priest but wanted the Church to restore itself to the original ideals of Christianity. He wanted to reduce the importance of rites and rituals in church worship and establish a direct contact between the people and God. The movement attracted the support of various German princes who desired independence from the Pope. Soon, protestant churches emerged in Germany and spread to other Northern European countries like England, Scotland, Netherlands and Switzerland.

(ii) There are many regions in our country that are rich in resources but are economically backward; whereas there are some regions which have a poor resource base but are economically developed.
(iii) Resources can contribute to development only when they are accompanied by appropriate technological development.
(iv) In India, development or resource development does not only mean the availability of resources but also the technology, quality of human resources and the historical experiences of the people.
