  • In India, the consumer movement came into being with the requirement of shielding and endorsing the interests of consumers against unscrupulous and unfair trade practices.
  • It was the uncontrolled food shortages, stocking, black marketing and adulteration that paved the way for the consumer movement in the 1960s.

Rat Hunt activity started in 1902 by the French. The French hired Vietnamese workers and paid them for each rat. 20,000 rats were caught but still, there was no end. This taught them a lesson in the success of collective bargaining, The sewer cleaners discovered innovative ways to profit making. The bounty was paid when a tail was given as a proof that a rat had been killed. Rat catchers took to just clipping the tails and releasing the rats so that the process could be repeated over and over. Even some people began raising rats to earn money.

The Balkan was a region of ethnic variations comprising of many states and territories whose inhabitants were known as slaves. A large part of Balkan was under control of the Ottoman Empire while some other parts were under control of Russia and Austria causing a complex problem. The spread of idea of Romantic nationalism in the Balkans together with the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire made the region very explosive. The Balkan people based their claim for independence or political rights on nationality and desired to win back their long lost freedom. The Balkans also became the scene of big power rivalry over trade and colonies as well as naval and military might. Each power Russia, Germany, England and Austria -Hungary -was keen on countering the hold of other powers over the Balkans and extending its own control over the area. This lead to a series of wars in the region and finally the First World War.
