- The movement was essentially a peaceful and non-violent protest against the British government in India.
- Indians were asked to relinquish their titles and resign from nominated seats in the local bodies as a mark of protest.
- People were asked to resign from their government jobs.
- People were asked to withdraw their children from government-controlled or aided schools and colleges.
- People were asked to boycott foreign goods and use only Indian-made goods.
- People were asked to boycott the elections to the legislative councils.
- People were asked not to serve in the British army.
- It was also planned that if the above steps did not bring results, people would refuse to pay their taxes.
- The INC also demanded Swarajya or self-government.

Consumer awareness is needed to protect the consumers from the exploitation. If safe guards their interests. It removes their ignorance, unawareness and illiteracy about the goods consumer awareness provides the consumer the knowledge of their rights where can be claimed to redress grievances.

- The consumer movement the world over was a byproduct of the unhappiness of the consumers when the sellers indulged in several unfair practices. At that point in time, there was no legal structure available to consumers to safeguard their interests in the marketplace.
- In India, the consumer movement came into being with the requirement of shielding and endorsing the interests of consumers against unscrupulous and unfair trade practices.
- It was the uncontrolled food shortages, stocking, black marketing and adulteration that paved the way for the consumer movement in the 1960s.

- This was a tool for nations to adopt measures to protect consumers and for consumer advocacy groups to press their governments to do so.
- At the international level, this has become foundation for consumer movement.
- Today, Consumers International has become an umbrella body of 240 organisations from over 120 countries, in which India is one of them.

Rat Hunt activity started in 1902 by the French. The French hired Vietnamese workers and paid them for each rat. 20,000 rats were caught but still, there was no end. This taught them a lesson in the success of collective bargaining, The sewer cleaners discovered innovative ways to profit making. The bounty was paid when a tail was given as a proof that a rat had been killed. Rat catchers took to just clipping the tails and releasing the rats so that the process could be repeated over and over. Even some people began raising rats to earn money.

Five major problems faced by the Indian democracy:
- Poverty, illiteracy, unemployment are still in existence most parts of India.
- Caste and gender discrimination continues to prevail in Indian Society, slackening advancement and development.
- Rampant corruption, red tapism, delays in public justice are weakening the foundation of Democracy.
- Exploitation of minorities in different castes and religions for narrow political gains has undermined the whole concept of democracy.
- Various separatist movements are also posing a challenge to the Indian democracy.

Bhudeb Mukhopadhyay’s Anguriya Binimoy (1857) was the first historical novel written in Bengal. The hero of this novel, Shivaji, engages in many battles against a clever and treacherous Aurangzeb. The daring travails of Shivaji were welcomed by the readers. The novel was so powerful that it could inspire actual political movements.
