Muslim response was lukewarm to the Civil Disobedience Movement. After the Non-cooperation-Khilafat Movement declined, relations between the Hindus and Muslims worsened as each community organised religious processions, provoking Hindu- Muslim communal clashes and riots.

Dalit participation was limited to the Civil Disobedience Movement because of the following reasons:
- The Congress did not want to offend to ‘Sanatanis’ the upper caste Hindus by including the Dalits.
- The Dalits believed that political empowerment would solve all the problems of their social disabilities.
- Many Dalit leaders were keen on a different political solution to their problems. They organised themselves and demanded reserved seats in educational institutions and separate electorate that would choose Dalit members for councils.
- Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who organized the Dalits into the Depressed Classes Association in 1930, clashed with Mahatma Gandhi at the Second Round Table Conference by demanding separate electorates for Dalits.
- When the British government conceded Dr. B. R. Ambedkar's demand, Gandhiji began a fast unto death.
- Gandhiji believed that separate electorates for Dalits would slow down the process of their integration into society.
- Dr. Ambedkar ultimately accepted Gandhiji's position and the result was the Poona Pact of September 1932.
- It gave the Depressed Classes (later to be known as the Scheduled Castes) reserved seats in Provincial and Central Legislative Councils, but they were to be voted in by the general electorate.

In situations with high risks, credit might create further problems for the borrower. This is also known as a debt-trap. Taking credit involves an interest rate on the loan and if this is not paid back, then the borrower is forced to give up his collateral or asset used as the guarantee, to the lender. This statement is true if we take an example of a small farmer who has taken a loan to meet cultivation expenses. In case, the crop fails due to inadequate rain, pest attack or any other reason, he will not be able to repay the loan and may have to sell part of his land for repaying the loan. Thus, this situation is a high-risk situation, depending entirely on a good crop.

Arguments in support of suffrage were grounded in women's rights: Natural rights—those who are affected by laws should have a say in making them. No taxation without representation—women are wage workers and pay taxes. Legislation will be more moral, educational and humane—women will clean up politics and government.

The government brutally repressed by attacking and arresting peaceful satyagrahis and beating women and children and Gandhiji wanted the Civil Disobedience Movement to be non-violent and peaceful. Since the movement turned violent, and many people were killed, Gandhiji called it off.

The march covered over 240 miles, from Gandhiji's ashram in a place called Sabarmati to the Gujarati coastal town of Dandi. On 6 April he reached Dandi, and ceremonially violated the law, and started manufacturing salt by boiling seawater. This movement marked the beginning of the Civil Disobedience Movement.

The following points state how the Civil Disobedience Movement came into force in various parts of the country:
- Gandhiji’s ‘Salt March’ marked the beginning of the Civil Disobedience Movement all over India. Thousands of people in different parts of the country broke the salt law by manufacturing salt and giving demonstrations in front of government salt factories.
- With the spread of the movement, the foreign cloth was boycotted and liquor shops were picketed. Peasants refused to pay revenue and Chaukidari taxes. Village officials resigned from their posts. Forest people violated forest law. They went into Reserved forests to collect wood and graze cattle.
- In the countryside, rich peasant communities like the Patidars of Gujarat, and Jats of Uttar Pradesh were active in the movement.
- The poorer peasantry, often led by the socialist and the communist, joined a variety of radical movements for the remission of their unpaid rent to the landlords.
- Merchants and industrialists supported the movement by giving financial assistance and refused to buy and sell imported goods. Industrialists led by Purshottamdas Thakurdas and GD Birla supported the Civil Disobedience Movement.
- The industrial working classes in the Nagpur region participated in the boycott programmes and there were strikes by railway workers and dockworkers in 1930 and 1932 respectively. Thousands of workers in Chotanagpur tin mines also supported the movement by joining protest rallies and boycott campaigns.
- A large number of women from all over India participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement.
