Cross-cutting differences happen when one type of social difference is weakened by another set of social differences. Then, it becomes difficult to group people into a single category because they are going to have different opinions and views on different matters.
On some matters, there might be agreement on a particular issue, but there might be disagreement on another issue. For example, people in the Netherlands are predominantly Christian, but divided between Catholics and Protestants. Here class and religion cross-cut each other. Catholics and Protestants are about equally likely to be poor or rich and they do not have conflict between them.

Laterite has been derived from the Latin word ‘later’ which means brick. The laterite soil develops in areas with high temperature and heavy rainfall. This is the result of intense leaching due to heavy rain. Laterite soils are suitable for cultivation with adequate doses of manures and fertilizers.

Advantages of the napoleonic code are:-
. Established equality before law.
. Abolished all privileges based on birth.
. Simplified administrative divisions.
. Granted the right to property to French citizens.
. Abolished feudal system and freed peasants from serfdom.
. Eliminated restrictions on guilds in town.
. Made efforts to improve transport and communication.

Disadvantages of the napoleonic code are:-
. But this initial enthusiasm soon turned into hostility and opposition when it became visible that the new administrative arrangements do not go hand in hand with the political freedom. Censorship, taxation, forced conscription into the French armies required to conquer the rest of Europe, all seemed to outweigh the advantages of the administrative changes.

Democracy is the rule of the citizens through their representatives. Measures to sustain democracy are:

  • Division of the powers of the governemnt into three organs: legislature, executive and judiciary. This is to ensure that no organ becomes too powerful. There should also be a system of checks and balances. Judiciary should be independent of legislature and executive.
  • Citizens should excercise the rights that are granted to them.
  • Citizens should actively participate in the process of decision making by involving themselves in debates and discussions. They should protest against repressive laws of the government.

Growth or progress in any existing thing or human with no decrease in financial state can be termed as development.
The reasons are as follows
Increase in population : India holds the second rank in the population. There are many things to be taken into consideration because of the population issues. If a country is highly populated it is sure that the development of the country will also be very slow.
2. Lack of unity among people : Unity is the strength of any nation. If the people are united then they get the great strength to tackle any kind of problem that is approaching them. This is the reason why people focus on the unity part of it. But in India we can very well say that there is no unity among the people. This is the reason why British held us as slaves for many years.
3. Politics in India : Politics is a great issue in any country. There should be a government and there should be a rule to govern the people and direct them to the right path.
4. Corruption a major issue : Corruption has now become a great issue in our country. India is ranking a great position in the corruption. This can prove how bad the condition of India is. There are many people who is performing corruption.
5. People being in below poverty line : The rich get richer and the poor gets poorer. There are still many people who are below poverty line in our country. The people who are below poverty line are not given any importance. According to me the government should take some perfect initiative to make the below poverty line people above the poverty line.

After independence in 1948 the democratically elected Sri Lankan Government adopted a series of Majoritarian measures to establish Sinhala supremacy by passing an Act in 1956. The measures were like;
(i) Sinhala was recognised as the only official language in Sri Lanka. Tamil language was not given due importance.
(ii) The Sri Lankan Government formulated a policy in which only Sinhala applicants were preferred for job in university and other Government jobs.
(iii) The new constitution of Sri Lanka declared that the Buddhism would be promoted by the state.
(iv) Thus, all these government measures coming after one another, gradually increased the feeling of alienation.

The nationwide agitation of 1857 , against the British rule in India is termed as a rebellion, a revolt, The "Sepoy Mutiny" and "War of Independence". But all these terms do justify together if interpreted in the national context.
There is no doubt that there was overall resentment against the foreign rulers and attempts were made at different levels to overthrow it. But a powerful and centrally organized force to combine the agitating agencies spread over the huge (then undivided) peninsula was lacking. There were numerous small states and principalities and kingdoms big and small. Individual and state interests were at stake. The doctrine of lapse, high taxes, the "Divide and Rule" policy, fleecing of resources along with unscrupulous suppression of local agitations, led to resentment at all levels of the ruled population. In Northern India the revolt was prominent because of the active involvement of ex-rulers like the Mogul emperor and the Peshwas and their still powerful halo.
In South India also the revolt took place in different regions and in specifically at five places in Karnataka. It was to remember the role of these martyrs on the 150th year of 1857, that a seminar was arranged in Mythic Society on May 27, 2007.
