- The French Revolution is significant for the fact that it marked the end of the institution of absolute monarchy in France and saw the establishment of a Republic. Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, which had become the guiding principles of the French Revolution, also became the foundational values of the French Republic.
- The ideas of liberty, equality and fraternity and the establishment of democratic government helped in the spread of nationalism in other parts of the world.
- The French Revolutionaries declared French as a common language of France, martyres were celebrated and oaths were taken on the name of the nation.
- The formal royal standard was replaced by the French tricolour.
All the above measures helped in spreading nationalism not only in France but also in Europe.

2. In 1830, Giuseppe Mazzini established a secret society called Young Italy and bring about a revolutionary uprising but failed.
3. Chief Minister Cavour diplomatically joined SardiniaPiedmont, in an alliance with France. It defeated the Austrian forces.
4. Armed volunteers led by Giuseppe Garibaldi also supported the troops and they marched into South Italy and the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. They got the support of the peasants there.
5. In 1861, Victor Emmanuel ll was declared the king of unified Italy. However, most of the Italians were unaware of the idea of liberal-nationalist ideology.

Averages are used to compare different countries, states, or regions. Since countries have different populations, comparing total income will not tell us what an average person is likely to earn. Averages have many limitations.
(a) They don’t give us the true picture regarding the distribution of income.
(b) Averages don’t give us any information regarding the non-materialistic goods and services.
Limitations of Average Income
While averages are useful for comparison, they also hide disparities.
For example let us consider two countries- A and B. For the sake of simplicity, we have assumed that they have only five citizens each. Based on the data given in the table, let us calculate the average income for both the countries.
Comparison of Two Countries
|
Country |
Monthly Income of Citizens in 2007 (in `) |
|||||
|
I |
II |
III |
IV
|
V |
Average |
|
| Country A |
9500 |
10500 |
9800 |
10000 |
10200 |
10000 |
| Country B |
500 |
500 |
500 |
500 |
48000 |
10000 |
Will you be equally happy to live in both these countries? Are both equally developed? Perhaps, some of us may like to live in country B if we are assured of being its fifth citizen, but if it is a lottery that decides our citizenship number, then perhaps, most of us will prefer to live in country A. This is because even though both the countries have an identical average income, country A is preferred because it has more equal distribution. In this country, people are neither very rich nor extremely poor, while most of the citizens in country B are poor, and one person is extremely rich.
Hence, while the average income is useful for comparison, it does not tell us how this income is distributed among the people.

Italy had a long history of political fragmentation. Italians were scattered over several dynastic states as well as the multi-national Habsburg Empire. During the middle of the nineteenth century, Italy was divided into seven states, of which only one, Sardinia-Piedmont, was ruled by an Italian princely house. The north was under Austrian Habsburgs, the centre was ruled by the Pope and the southern regions were under the domination of the Bourbon kings of Spain.

Money's most important function is as a medium of exchange to facilitate transactions.
In order to be a medium of exchange, money must hold its value over time; that is, it must be a store of value.
Money also functions as a unit of account, providing a common measure of the value of goods and services being exchanged.
Without money, all transactions would have to be conducted by barter, which involves direct exchange of one good or service for another.
In other words, in a barter system, exchange can take place only if there is a double coincidence of wants.
Money effectively eliminates the double coincidence of wants problem by serving as a medium of exchange that is accepted in all transactions.

Classification of economic sectors on the basis of nature of activities are as follows :
(i) Primary sector: When we produce goods by exploiting natural resources, it is an activity of the primary sector, such as agriculture, dairy farming, fishing, forestry.
(ii) Secondary sector: In this, natural products are changed into other forms through manufacturing that we associate with industrial activity. The product is not produced by nature but has to be made and therefore, some process of manufacturing is essential. For example, using cotton fibre from the plant we spin, yarn and weave cloth.
(iii) Tertiary sector: It helps in the development of the primary and secondary sectors. They provide aid or a support for the production process. Transport, storage, communication, banking, trade are some examples of tertiary activities.
