    ‘Slash and burn’ agriculture is the other name for shifting Agriculture. It is the most primitive farming type practised by the tribal people living in tropical regions.
    Salient features of this agriculture are :
    (i) Forests are cleared and trees are burnt to make the land available for cultivation.
    (ii) Digging stick is mainly used for cultivation.
    (iii) Mainly root crops and food crops are grown for their own use.
    (iv) After 2 years when the soil becomes impoverished they move to another forest area.
    (v) Productivity is very low as there is less use of natural fertilisers and pesticides, etc.

    Giuseppe Mazzini was an Italian revolutionary who founded two underground societies; first Young Italy in Marseilles and then Young Europe in Berne. Giuseppe Mazzini was an important figure in liberal natioanlism. He made a significant contribution to the unification of Italy. By 1830, Giuseppe Mazzini put forward a coherent programme of a unitary Italian Republic formed a secret society named Young Italy to inspire them with ideas of unification.Inspired by Mazzini several Secret societies sprang up in many European states to train revolutionaries and spread their ideas.He inspired the youth of Italy with natioanlist ideas.He believed God intended nations to be natural units of mankind and Italy could not continue to be a patchwork of small states and kingdomsHe founded the underground secret societies Youth Italy Italy and Young Europe to involve the youth in revolutionary activities.

    1. Giuseppe Mazzini was an Italian revolutionary. Born in Genoa in 1807, he become a member of the secret society of the carbonari. As a young man of 24, he was sent into exile in 1831 for attempting a revolution in Liguri.
    2. He subsequently founded two more underground societies first, young Italy in Marseilles, and then, young Europe in Berne.
    3. Mazzini believed that God had intended nations to be the natural unit of mankind. So Italy could not continue to be a patchwork of small states and kingdoms. It had to be forged into a single unified republic within a wider alliance of nation.

    1. In case of an open unemployment, a person is willing to work, but he does not get a place or opportunity to work. On the other hand in case of a distinguished unemployment, more number of people work for the same work that can be carried out by lesser people, thus the ultimate effort of these people is actually null.

    2. Open unemployment can be perceived while disguised unemployment cannot be easily perceived.

    3. In open unemployment, the overall economy of a country can be affected positively or negatively if employees join or leave, but in disguised unemployment, it doesn't matter whether they are there or not.

    4. All employees are important in open unemployment while extra employees mean nothing in disguised unemployment.

    5. In open unemployment, the individual is not earning a penny, while in disguised unemployment the employee feels he is contributing something, while he is of no use to that work as he is treated as "extra".

    i) Primary education became compulsory from the late nineteenth century, children became an important category of readers. Production of school textbooks became critical for the publishing industry. (ii) A children's press devoted to literature for children alone, was set up in France in 1857. (iii) This press published new works as well as old fairy tales and folk tales. (iv) The Grimm brothers in Germany spent years in compiling traditional folk tales gathered from peasants. What they collected was edited before the stories were published in a collection in 1812. (v) Anything that was considered unsuitable for children or would appear vulgar to the elites, was not included in the published version. Rural folk tales thus acquired i new form. In this way, print recorded old tales but also changed them.

    The British Indian Government installed canals in some parts of the country to irrigate the desert-like lands to grow wheat and cotton for export. This was done in Punjab. As the area was irrigated, peasants came and settled and formed a colony, that area is called the Canal Colony.

    It led to huge defence expenditure which was financed by war loans and increasing taxes.2) Through the war years price increased- doubled between 1913 and 1918 leading to extreme hardship for common people.3) Villages were called upon to serve the soliders and forced recruitment in rural areas caused widespread anger .4) In 1918- 1920 -21 , crops failed in many parts of India resulting in acute shortages of food. This was accompanied by influenza epidemic.
