The First World War was a major global conflict that lasted four years, from 1914 to 1918. It began on 28 July 1914, when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia one month to the day after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were killed by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo. The conflict, which became known as The Great War, was fought between two groups: the Triple Alliance – made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy; and the Triple Entente - made up of Great Britain, France and Russia. The United States of America entered the war in 1917. The First World War ended on 11 November 1918 when the Allies and Germany signed a ceasefire, or 'armistice’

Minerals are an indispensable part of our lives:
- Almost everything we use, from a tiny pin to a towering building or a big ship, all are made from minerals.
- The railway lines and the tarmac (paving) of the roads, our implements, and machinery to are made from minerals.
- Cars, buses, trains, aeroplanes are manufactured from minerals and run on power resources derived from the earth.
- Even the food that we eat contains minerals. It is only 0.3 percent of the total intake of nutrients but they are so potent and so important that without them we would not be able to utilise the other 99.7 percent of the foodstuffs.
- In all stages of development, human beings have used minerals for their livelihood, decoration, festivities, religious and ceremonial rites.

Three factors responsible for the migration of indentured labour from India were
- Decline of cottage industries and the increase in the rents of the lands forced the indentured labour to migrate from India.
- The colonial government cleared land for mining and establishing plantation industry. Many people thus lost their land.
- Many poor and tribal people migrated from India in order to escape poverty and oppression in their home villages.

We need to conserve mineral resources due to the reasons as mentioned below :
(i) Our industry and agriculture depend on mineral deposits and the substances manufactured from them. But the total volume of workable mineral deposits is an insignificant fraction i.e., one per cent of the earth’s crest.
(ii) It took millions of years for the creation and concentration of mineral resources.
(iii) The geological processes of mineral formation is very slow but its consumption is fast. It may result in shortage in near future.
(iv) The mineral resources are finite and non-renewable.
(v) Even rich mineral deposits in a country like India are valuable but short-lived possessions.
