(i) Land resources in India are primarily divided into
agricultural land, forest land, land meant for pasture and grazing, land for other non-agricultural use(such as housing, roads and industry) and waste land (rocky, arid and desert areas). In 2002-03, 54 per cent of the total land area was cultivable or fallow, 22.5 per cent was covered by forests and 3.5 per cent was used for grazing. The rest was waste land, with traces of miscellaneous cultivation.
Improper use of forest land has degraded the available land area and made conservation of forests difficult. Human activities such as deforestation, mining and quarrying have contributed to the slow growth rate of forests. Thus, land ’ under forest has increased by only about 4 per cent since
1960-61.
(ii) The following technical and economic development have led to more consumption of resources
(a) Technological development has led to industrialisation which has increased the use of natural resources.
(b) Technological development has converted the subsistence agriculture to commercial agriculture and this has led to the over-utilisation of soil.
© Technological development has also improved the process of mining.
(d) The development of technology contributed to
increase in production of quality goods and provision of better services to the people.
(e) Economic development has led to increasing urbanisation and modernisation which demands more resources.

The British Isles was inhabited by ethnic English, Welsh,Scot or Irish. The english nation grew more in power and wealth, and it began to exert influence over the other nations of the islands . The concept of Nation state came in 1688, after the parliament snatched power from the monarchy. In 1707, the Act of Union b/w England and scotland resulted in the formation of United Kingdom of Britain. The British imposed control over Ireland. The English favoured the protestants and helped them establish their dominance over catholics. In 1801, Ireland was forcibly incorporated into the United Kingdom after a failed Irish Revolt.

Major problems faced in education by French in Vietnam:
1. Even though French wanted an educated labour force, they didn't want to educate them so much that the colons' jobs would be endangered and Vietnamese question their rule.
2. The French wanted to remove the Chinese influence amongst the Vietnamese elites. They believed imposing a different language was the way to do so.
3. Some wanted French to be imposed to introduce Vietnamese to French culture. But others wanted Vietnamese to be taught in lower classes and French in higher classes.

Advantages of the napoleonic code are:-
. Established equality before law.
. Abolished all privileges based on birth.
. Simplified administrative divisions.
. Granted the right to property to French citizens.
. Abolished feudal system and freed peasants from serfdom.
. Eliminated restrictions on guilds in town.
. Made efforts to improve transport and communication.

Disadvantages of the napoleonic code are:-
. But this initial enthusiasm soon turned into hostility and opposition when it became visible that the new administrative arrangements do not go hand in hand with the political freedom. Censorship, taxation, forced conscription into the French armies required to conquer the rest of Europe, all seemed to outweigh the advantages of the administrative changes.

The reasons for expanding credit in India are
(i) High cost of borrowing leads to a major share of earnings going into payment of interest on the loan.
(ii) Sometimes the higher interest rate leads to the requirement to pay more than the earnings, thus falling into a debt-trap.
(iii) Borrowers falling into debt-traps discourage more people from borrowing, thus reducing development of the country.
(iv)Banks and cooperative societies lending to more borrowers will lead to higher incomes and many people could then borrow cheaply for a variety of needs like growing crops, set-up business or small-scale industries.

Yes, I agree with the statement, that in India there are regions which are rich in certain types, of resources, but are deficient in some other resources. There are some regions which can be considered self-sufficient in terms of the availability of resources and there are some regions which have acute shortage of some vital resources, e.g. The states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh are rich in minerals and coal deposits.
Arunachal Pradesh has abundance of water resources, but lacks in infrastructural development.
The state of Rajasthan is very well endowed with solar and wind energy, but lacks in water resources.

Advantages of roadways over railways are
(i) Construction cost of roads is much lower than railway lines.
(ii) Roads can be constructed easily in hilly terrains and undulating topography.
(iii) Roadways act as a feeder to other modes of transport, as they provide a link between railway stations, air and sea ports.
(iv) Road transport is economical in transportation of few persons and relatively smaller amount of goods over short distances.
Thus, it can be concluded that roadways still have an edge over railways in India.

  • In 1859, the state of Sardinia-Piedmont defeated the Austrians. In 1860, the Italian forces helped by Giuseppe Garibaldi and his volunteers marched into southern Italy and unified it with Italy.
