Politics in Caste
The caste system in India can also become politicised in the following ways:
- When a particular caste tries to gain prominence by adding many neighbouring castes and sub-castes which were earlier not included.
- The caste system also becomes politicised when caste groups are required to enter into a coalition with other castes. In such a case, every caste tries to gain maximum benefits for itself.
- Of late, many caste groups have gained entry into politics by terming themselves as ‘backward’ or ‘forward’ caste groups.
It is to be noticed that the existence of the caste system is itself not healthy for any democracy. It mostly produces negative results. In India, it has resulted in the vicious circle of poverty, unemployment and illiteracy for many castes. The caste system may also lead to caste division, caste violence and conflicts resulting in violence.
Caste in Politics
However, we also need to keep in mind that the caste system always does not play a role in shaping politics or deciding the candidates from a constituency. This is due to the following reasons:
- Not every constituency in the country has a clear majority of one single caste. Therefore, every party is required to win the trust of the people belonging to different castes.
- No political party wins all the votes of a particular favoured caste or community. When people say that caste is a ‘vote bank’, they simply mean that many people from that one particular caste may vote for the party.
- Because several political parties fight elections, there may be many candidates from the same caste fighting elections against each other.
- It has been seen that many elected MPs or MLAs may lose the elections. If candidates are elected on caste lines, then no candidate can ever lose the elections.

An accountable government is answerable to its citizens. It is responsible for all the decisions it makes on behalf of its citizens.
Government accountability means that public officials elected and un-elected have an obligation to explain their decisions and actions to the citizens. Government accountability is achieved through the use of a variety of mechanisms political, legal, and administrative designed to prevent corruption and ensure that public officials remain answerable and accessible to the people they serve. In the absence of such mechanisms, corruption may thrive.

-in most of the democracies a small number of ultra rich enjoy a highly disproportionate share of wealth and income
-The share of rich class is increasing where as those who are at the bottom of the society have very little to depend upon
-even in India the poor constitutive large proportion of our voters and no party will like to lose its votes . Yet democratically elected government do not appear to be as keen to address the question of poverty as one would expect them to.
-The situation is much worse in some other countries. In Bangladesh more than half of its population lives in poverty. People in several poor countries are now depended on the rich countries even for the food supplies
-Even the Indian democracy has also failed to tackle the issue of inequality. Even after more than 65years of independence, more than 30% of the people still survive only with 1.25dollar per day

Conservative regimes did not tolerate criticism and dissent and sought to curb activities that questioned the legitimacyof autocratic government. Most of them imposed censorship laws to control what was said in newspapers, books, plays and songs and reflected the ideas of liberty and freedom. They were auto matic in nature.

The Parliament elects a President (As per the rules in Lebanon, the president must belong to the Maronite sect) every six years to a single term. The President is not eligible for the re-election. The president and parliament together choose the Prime Minister (the prime minister must belong to the Sunni Muslim community). The deputy prime minister’s post is fixed for the orthodox Christians. The speaker’s post is only for Shia Muslims.
A new twist in Lebanese politics happened when the Doha Agreement settled a new trend in which the opposition was allowed a veto power in the Lebanese Council of Ministers and confirmed religious Confessionals in distribution of political power.
