During the 'Age of Revolution', the first insurrection took place in France in July 1830. The Bourbon dynasty, restored during the conservative reaction after 1815, was overthrown by liberal revolutionaries. In its place, a constitutional moarchy with Louis Philippe at is head was installed. This 'July Revolution' led to another insurrection in Brussels and led to Begium becoming independent from the control of the Kingdom of Netherlands. Even before these events, it had been witnessed that France was the political nervecentre of the rest of Europe. Ever since the French Revolution, the political developments in France had direct impact on the rest of the European continent. Hence Metternich said 'When France sneezes, the rest of Europe catches cold'.

All the suggestions or proposals about overcoming various challenges to democracy are called democracy reform or political reform.
- Reforming politics by making new laws.
- Carefully devised changes in law can help to discourage wrong political practices and encourage good ones.
- Any legal change must carefully look at what results it will have on politics. Sometimes the results may be counter productive. For example, many states have banned people who have more than two children from contesting panchayat elections. This has resulted in denial of democratic opportunity to many poor people and women.
- The best laws are those which empower people to carry out democratic reforms.
- The Right to Information Act is a good example of a law that empowers the people to find out what is happening in govt.
- Democratic reforms are to be brought about principally through political practice.
- Any proposal for political reform should think not only about what is a good solution but also about who will implement it and how.

The Great Depression in 1929 had a major effect on prices, income, and production of goods in many countries. India also faced many such negative effects in the rural segments. One such effect was the decline in the wheat prices. It fell to almost 50% during 1928-1934. This, in turn, worsened the plight of the farmers. There was a large amount of unused crop and nobody to purchase it.

The First World War led to the development of the Indian industries. It was because of the following reasons:
- During the First World War, the British industries focused on meeting the war needs of the army. This led to the decline of imports from Manchester.
- This created a void in the Indian markets which was filled by the Indian industries.
- During the war, Indian industries also had to supply goods to the army. They mostly supplied jute bags, cloth for making army uniforms, leather boots and saddles.
- Many new industries were set up in India to cater to the war needs. Many workers were employed. After the war, Manchester was never able to regain its lost position in the market

Formal and Informal Credit: Who gets that?
- The various types of loans can be conveniently grouped as formal sector loans and informal sector loans.
- Formal credit is generally available with the banks and cooperatives. They charge lesser rates of interest than informal institutions. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) supervises the functioning of formal sources of loans.
- Informal lenders include moneylenders, traders, employers, relatives and friends etc. They charge much higher interest on loans. There is no one to stop them from using unfair means to get their money back.
- As cheap and affordable credit is crucial for the country's development therefore, banks and cooperative societies need to lend more.
- 85% of the loans taken by poor households in the urban areas are from informal sources.
- Rich urban households take only 10% of their loans from informal sources, while 90% are from formal sources. A similar pattern is also found in rural areas.
- In a current scenario, It is the richer households who receive formal credit whereas the poor have to depend on the informal sources.
- It is important that the formal credit is distributed more equally so that the poor can benefit from the cheaper loans.
- It is necessary that banks and cooperatives increase their lending, particularly in the rural areas, so that the dependence on informal sources of credit can be reduced.
- While formal sector loans need to expand, it is also necessary that everyone receives these loans.

Source A Ernest Renan, ‘What is a Nation? In a lecture delivered at the University of Sorbonne in 1882, the French philosopher Ernest Renan (1823-92) outlined his understanding of what makes a nation. The lecture was subsequently published as a famous essay entitled ‘Qu’est-ce qu’une nation?’ (‘What is a Nation?’).
In this essay Renan criticises the notion suggested by others that a nation is formed by a common language, race, religion, or territory: A nation is the culmination of a long past of endeavours, sacrifice and devotion. A heroic past, great men, glory, that is the social capital upon which one bases a national idea. To have common glories in the past, to have a common will in the present, to . have performed great deeds together, to wish to perform still more, these are the essential conditions of being a people.
A nation is therefore a large-scale solidarity … Its existence is a daily plebiscite … A province is its inhabitants; if anyone has the right to be consulted, it is the inhabitant. A nation never has any real interest in annexing or holding on to a country against its will.
The existence of nations is a good thing, a necessity even. Their existence is a guarantee of liberty, which would be lost if the world had only one law and only one master.

Major forms of power sharing in modern democracy are:
- Power sharing among different Organs of the Government: In democracy, power is shared among Legislature, Executive and Juduciary. This is known as distribution of power. No organ of the governemnt can e P xcercise unlimited power as each ower sharing among different Organs of the Government organ checks the others.
- Governments at different levels: In federal form of government, power is shared between the central and state governments. In India there is another lower level of government -local self government. This is called vertical division of government.
- Social Groups: Power may also be shared among different social groups such as religious and linguistic groups. In India, there are constitutional and legal arrangements whereby socially weaker sections and women are represented in the legislatures and administration.
- Division of power between political parties, pressure groups and movements: Political parties are the organisations which aim to control power by contesting elections. In a democracy, citizens have the freedom to choose among the various contenders for power. When no party gets a majority, two or more parties come together to form a governemnt. In a democracy, pressure and interest groups also have an indirect share in the governemnt's power.
