Nuclear energy is generated either by Fission of a nucleus into two or more fragments , or by Fusion of two nuclei into one.
When large atom of Uranium or Plutonium is bombarded with high speed neutrons, protons, alpha particle in a nuclear reactor, then the nucleus splits and releases a lot of potential energy in the nucleus.
The nuclear energy is used to superheat steam and then drive a rotor axle inside a generator and then generate electricity.
