    Nobody knows exactly why he built the temple other than himself. But we can possibly conclude the most probable reasons leading to the temple being built from the works of authors, historians etc..It was his long time dream to build a large granite temple, the first of its kind in the world that time. He wanted Thanjavur (then capital of the Cholas) to be not just remembered by the future generations as a fort or a city or a place where the great Cholas ruled, but a place where God lived. He wished us to see how well the people of that time lived, and how wonderfully God protected and blessed them. The descendants can understand how people worshiped their lord by placing their art, culture and valor under his feet. RajaRajan thought that the bodies of the people may be temporary in this world, but their mind and the thoughts that occur from the people’s minds must not be buried with them. One more reason was that the Cholas had captured nearly 100,000 POW's during that time due to the result of winning the war with their neighboring kingdoms. Such a number of enemy prisoners can’t be held safe for so long. So he wanted to make full use of them by utilizing them for building the temple.

    Initially many people welcomed French armies as harbingers of liberty. But the initial enthusiasm soon turned to hostility, as it became clear that the new administrative arrangements did not go hand in hand with political freedom.     The tax on salt and the government monopoly over its production made Mahatma Gandhi very much disturbed. In his opinion, it was a gross atrocity on the part of the British government. Salt was something consumed by the rich and the poor alike, and it was one of the most essential items of food. Hence, it must be exempted from any tax. He sent a letter to Viceroy Lord Irwin on 31 January, 1930 with eleven demands.These demands were concerned with interests of all sections of the Indian people.The most stirring of all was the demand to make salt tax-free. But Irwin showed reluctance. Now, Mahatma Gandhi had no time to wait. He started his 240 miles long Dandi March from his Ashram at Sabarmati to the Gujarati coastal town of Dandi. He was accompanied by 78 of his followers. On 6 April, he reached Dandi and openly violated the law, manufacturing salt by boiling sea water. People were now asked not only to refuse cooperation with the British, but also to break colonial laws.

    Conservatism was a political ideology which stressed on the importance of traditional institutions like Monarchy, Property, Social heirarchies, etc and preferred gradual development over quick change. Though conservatives, the followers of this ideology, strongly criticised the Napoleonic rule, they later attained a realisation that modernisation, in the long run, strengthened monarchy. So, they started supporting ideas like a modern army, efficient beureucracy, abolition of feudal privileges, etc.
