The growth of modern nationalism has a close connection to the anti-colonial movement. This was true not only in the case of India, but also in Vietnam and many other colonies. In the process of their struggle with colonialism people began discovering their unity.A shared bond that tied many different groups together was the sense of being oppressed under colonialism. The effects of colonialism were different for each class and group. For each class and group the notion of freedom was different and their experiences were varied. In India, attempts were made to forge different groups together within one movement by Congress under Mahatma Gandhi. But unity did not happen without conflict.
