The electronic configuration of carbon atom is 1s² 2s² 2p_x¹ 2p_y¹. Carbon has four valence electrons.
In order to form ionic compound, it has to either lose four electrons or gain four electrons.
To gain or lose four electrons, very high energy is required.
So, carbon does not form ionic compounds.
It can accommodate four pairs of electrons around it. So, It completes octet by sharing of electrons and forms covalent compounds.
