A base is a substance that reacts with acids and neutrlize them. Some bases are soluble in water some are insoluble. Soluble bases are called alkalies.
For example copper oxide does not dissolve in water. Hence it is called as base.
Definition of an alkali: A base that is soluble in water is called an alkali.
In general hydroxides of alkali metals and alkaline earthmetals are considered as alkalies.
Example:
KOH (aq) → K+(aq) + OH- (aq)
Ca(OH)2(aq) → Ca+2 (aq) + OH- (aq)
Therefore, it is said that all alkalis are bases, but all bases are not alkalies.

Following are the points of Darwin’s theory of natural selection:
Over-production: Every organism has enormous potential to reproduce.
Struggle for existence: Population size of an organism is limited due to struggle between the members of same species as well as the members of different species. It is due to struggle for food, space and mate.
Variation: Due to struggle, the fit organisms possess some variations which are favourable, and they can leave the progeny to continue the favourable variations.
Survival of the fittest: The fittest organism survive to continue the favourable variations.
Formation of a new species: These variations when accumulated for a long time, leads to the origin of a new species.

A kidney can filter 100-150 quarts of blood every day. If the kidneys are not functioning properly, waste starts accumulating in the blood. This results in coma and even death.
To cure this, the patient is subjected to dialysis. Dialysis maintains the body balance in the following ways:
- It controls the blood pressure.
- It removes excess water and metabolic wastes from the body.
- Prevents chemicals such as potassium, bicarbonate and sodium from reaching hazardous levels.
Dialysis is used for people with a critical kidney disorder (grave kidney damage, previously severe renal failure). It is required when the kidney loses 90% of its efficiency and has a glomerular filtration rate of less than 15. This treatment may continue for months or years since most kidney failures are irreversible.
