Because the lining of the Stomach has mucus which protects it from harm.Furthermore HCl is not necessarily poisonous.This was never said in the chapter its just that HCl is acidic nature.Consuming acidic substances does not necessarily harm the body-for example Lemon Juice has high pH value but still it is consumed without any ill effects.
