If possible,let √p be a rational number.
also a and b is rational.
then,√p = a/b
on squaring both sides,we get,
(√p)²= a²/b²
→p = a²/b²
→b² = a²/p [p divides a² so,p divides a]
Let a= pr for some integer r
→b² = (pr)²/p
→b² = p²r²/p
→b² = pr²
→r² = b²/p [p divides b² so, p divides b]
Thus p is a common factor of a and b.
But this is a contradiction, since a and b have no common factor.
This contradiction arises by assuming √p a rational number.
Hence,√p is irrational.

Sum of the areas of two squares = 468 m2

Let a and b be the sides of the two squares.

⇒a2 + b2 = 468…(1)

Also given that, the difference of their perimeters = 24m

⇒4a - 4b = 24

⇒a - b = 6

⇒a = b + 6…(2)

We need to find the sides of the two squares.

Substituting the value of a from equation (2) in equation (1), we have,

(b + 6)2 + b2 = 468

⇒b2 + 62 + 2 × b × 6 + b2 = 468

⇒2b2 + 36 + 12b = 468

⇒2b2 + 36 + 12b - 468 = 0

⇒2b2 + 12b - 432 = 0

⇒b2 + 6b - 216 = 0

⇒b2 + 18b - 12b - 216 = 0

⇒b(b + 18) - 12(b + 18) = 0

⇒(b + 18)(b - 12) = 0

⇒b + 18 = 0 or b - 12 = 0

⇒b = -18 = 0 or b = 12

Side cannot be negative and hence b = 12 m.

Therefore, a = b + 6 = 12 + 6 = 18 m.

-140 is the value of K

Abhay Modi 6 years, 10 months ago

As -5 is a root of the equation 2x^2+px-15=0 so it is also a root of the equation p(x^2+x)+k=0 Now, 2x^2+px-15=0 =>2(-5)^2+p(-5)-15=0 =>2×25-5p-15=0 =>50-5p-15=0 =>35-5p=0 =>-5p=-35 =>5p=35 =>p=7 Now,putting p=7 and x=-5 in the equation p(x^2+x)+k=0, we get, p(x^2+x)+k=0 =>7{(-5)^2+(-5)}+k=0 =>7(25-5)+k=0 =>7×20+k=0 =>140+k=0 =>k=-140
