The author of the diary. Anne was born on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, and was four years old when her father moved to Holland to find a better place for the family to live. She is very intelligent and perceptive, and she wants to become a writer. Anne grows from an innocent, tempestuous, precocious, and somewhat petty teenage girl to an empathetic and sensitive thinker at age fifteen. Over the course of the diary, she grows from a spoiled, somewhat naive young girl of thirteen to a self-aware young woman of fifteen. Although she has little political consciousness at the beginning of the diary, she grows to question anti-Semitism and the point of war. During her time in the annex, she suffers from boredom, despair, and the petty persecution of those around her. She also discovers a wealth of good qualities in herself. After the annex residents are discovered, she goes to the concentration camp at Belsen, in Germany, where she dies before her sixteenth birthday. Anne dies of typhus in the concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen in late February or early March of 1945.

Terribly missing his daughter, indifferent to bad weather and health, Ali went to the post-office everyday without fail in the hope to receive a letter from his daughter. The employees at the post-office made fun of him. Not bothered by their jokes he returned to the post-office the next day. Even when he was not well, struggling to breathe, with clear signs of his approaching end he made to the post-office. With his patience exhausted, but faith intact he gave five gold guineas to the post-office clerk with a promise to deliver the letter at his grave after his death. The entire lesson is woven around the letter and Ali’s optimism to receive it one day.

Anne Sullivan was twenty years old when she was sent from the Perkins School for the Blind to help teach Helen Keller, who was six years old. Helen had contracted an illness before she was two that left her unable to speak or hear. Her family did not know how to cope with Helen's blindness and deafness, and let her do whatever she wanted. They did not know whether she was intelligent, as she had no way of communicating. Anne Sullivan had vision problems herself, and knew other methods to teach those who could not see or hear. Anne was strict with Helen; for example, Helen would wander around the table at mealtimes, taking food from whatever plates she wanted. Anne forced Helen to sit and use utensils to eat. Anne repeatedly finger-spelled words into Helen's hand in order to show her names for items. In this way, Helen learned to communicate.
