A modal is a type of auxiliary (helping) verb that is used to express: ability, possibility, permission or obligation. Modal phrases (or semi-modals) are used to express the same things as modals, but are a combination of auxiliary verbs and the preposition to. Examples of modal verbs include can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will and would. Adverbs that modify these verbs say something about possibility, obligation, and emphasis. Remember that modal adverbs cannot be negated, and they are not used in questions.

Lencho went out in the rain to feel the rain falling down. He compared the big drops of rain to new coins. He compared them to coins because the rain indicated a very good and healthy harvest of the year. He was hoping that this year his crops would bring him a lot of money. It is because of this reason that he symbolizes the drops of rain to the coins falling from the sky on him and his family.

In English traditional grammar, a phrasal verb is the combination of two or three words from different grammatical categories – a verb and a particle, such as an adverb or a preposition – to form a single semantic unit on a lexical or syntactic level. Examples: turn down, run into, sit up.
