Modal verbs are verbs such as can, may, must, need not, shall/should/ought to. They indicate ability, permission, etc.
Example: Vijay is 15 years old and wants to become a mechanic. He is going to take over his father’s garage, so he need not worry about his future. Vijay’s father tells him every day that he must do what he is told and must not touch any dangerous equipment. Vijay can already change tyres, but he has to learn a lot more about cars. He should work in the garage more often if he wants to be a good mechanic.

The tiger moves slowly up and down in his cage. ... He says that the tiger should have been in the jungle. He should have been moving quietly in the shadows near some water hole, and waiting for a plump deer to pass that way.

Dear Poko,
Hope you are hale and hearty. This year is not going to be as good for me as the last one. The rains have ruined all my harvest. We have nothing to eat. So, I thought of writing a letter to God and asked him to send 100 pesos. And do you know Poko, I got the money but not the amount I had asked for. Thirty pesos were missing. I have doubt on the post-office employees. I wrote to God again and requested for the remaining money. Im sure he will definitely send the money again.
Im waiting for a reply from God.
With love
Lencho.

The title of the chapter 'A triumph of surgery' is appropriate as getting Tricki well and energetic was a true victory for the vet. Mrs Pumphrey ahd been pampering her pet silly by overfeeding him. As a result, Tricki had become overweight and lethargic. All that the listless dog needed was some exercise and a balanced diet. The vet was able to treat Tricki by controlling his food intake and getting him to play with the other dogs at the surgery. He did not even need to discuss his methods with the owner who presumed some complicated surgery ahd been performed on Tricki

Lencho seems to be an impulsive man, as he had hoped for a good rain. But he became despaired on seeing the destroyed crop. He had tolerance and the courage to face the challanges in life. His firm faith in God made him to write a letter and the tolerance in him kept him waiting for the reply. He accepted the seventy pesos and again faced the situation writing a second letter demanding for the rest of the amount. In the same manner one must face the situation courageously and be tolerant to overcome the difficulty.

When Lencho opened the envelope, he found only 70 pesos instead of 100. He doubted that the post-office employees had taken out 30 pesos. So, he called them a bunch of crooks’. But really they were not a bunch of crooks.

Lencho became angry when he counted the money that God had sent him. He found that the money amounted to seventy pesos only whereas he had asked for hundred pesos. He believed that the post office employees have stolen the rest of the amount because God could never make a mistake. Also, God would never deny Lencho what he had requested.

Lencho hoped for rains as the corn fields needed rain shower for irrigation. He referred to the rain drops as coins. To his biggest misfortune, hailstones came down instead of rain water which would destroy the crops utterly.
After raining for an hour, as Lencho feared, the hailstorm destroyed the whole corn harvest. His hope turned into despair as he knew he would have to stay hungry for a year.

Lencho was angry after opening the letter because he found only seventy pesos inside the envelope. He had demanded a hundred pesos from God. Instead of getting angry on God, he got angry on the post office employees because he thought them to have misappropriated the money.

Lencho's house was situated on the crest of a low hill in the valley. The whole day he sat seeing the sky because he knew his fields needed downpour or at least a shower, so he was waiting to see the signs of rain.

Lencho became angry when he received the letter because he was only given 70 pesos when he had asked for 100 pesos.
He thought that god would not deny him his wish and hence concluded that someone at the post office must have stolen the money before delivering it to him.

Mrs. Pumphrey, Tricki’s owner starts giving explanations. She told Mr. Herriot that she thought that Tricki was malnourished because he did not have any energy and excitement. She told him that she used to give him malt, cod liver oil and a bowl of Horlicks at night, apart from his regular meals so that he could sleep at night. Although she gave him so much to eat, she says that she doesn't give him much to eat.
