The story, “A Letter to God” by G.L. Fuentes depicts the unwavering faith of a farmer in God. It begins with a farmer, named Lencho expecting for a rain shower to nourish his field of corn. He is confident that his harvest is going to yield him huge profits just like it does every year. To his utmost excitement, rainfall did happen but sooner, it turned into a hailstorm destroying his entire crop field. The damage posed a threat to the family’s survival as their entire livelihood was dependent on the year’s produce. Although disheartened, the family had robust belief in the almighty. Lencho, despite having worked day and night at the field, knew how to write and thus, decided to write a letter to God explaining his situation and asking for help. He went to town to post his letter addressed “To God”. The letter on being noticed by the postmaster, at first amused him, but then motivated him want to do something for the farmer so as to keep his immense belief intact. He contributes from his salary and collects money from his colleagues and friends who willingly contributed for an act of charity. To his dismay, he could only collect 70 pesos which he wrapped in an envelope to make it seem like a reply from the deity. On having found the letter, the writer (Lencho) is not at all shocked, but instead, he gets angry on finding that the amount is less than what he had expected. He again writes a letter to God conveying his disappointment and distrust in the employees of the post office who he thought had stolen the remaining amount.

Gerrard, the protagonist of “If I Were You” is portrayed as a man of many virtues. He is endowed with a brilliant wit, a sharp mind, smart thinking, and a sense of humour. All these qualities, combined with a cool temperament enable him to handle even a life-threatening situation very successfully and easily. Gerrard is associated with the theatre. He writes acts and provides props for plays. He is a refined and a cultured man, who keeps his cool even in the most difficult situations. The sight of an intruder doesn’t ruffle him and he talks to him very courteously and pleasantly. His sense of humour irritates the intruder many times. Even when acting funny, he keeps his presence of mind and lays a trap for the intruder. Everything comes so naturally and spontaneously to him that the intruder walks into his trap unsuspectingly. Gerrard’s intelligence not only outwits the intruder and saves his own life, but also helps the police in nabbing a wanted criminal. In fact Gerrard, with his unagitated, composed mind stands as a foil to the cruel and villainous intruder

It is a universal and time-tested truth that ostentation and vanity often land people in trouble. Matilda is an apt example of this. Wise men have always emphasized on the axiom ‘Cut your coat according to your cloth.’ There is much wisdom hidden in this cautionary proverb. However, people often fall prey to the temptations such as ostentation and vanity of the world. The Necklace is a wonderful story that teaches us the similar lesson. Matilda had been ambitious since beginning. She had excessive attraction for the rich society. When her husband received invitation to the ball, she became abnormally excited about it. She went beyond her means to make arrangements for herself for the ball. She spent excessively on her dress. And for the jewellery, she thought of borrowing Madame Forestier’s necklace. Unfortunately, the borrowed necklace was lost at the party. She and her husband had to face ten years’ grueling headships to pay for the replacement of the lost necklace. After ten years she came to know from Madame Forestier that it was just an artificial necklace. If Matilda had not been so much lured by ostentation and vanity, she would not have faced all those hardships.
