The young seagull was alone on the ledge because he was afraid of flying. He had two brothers and a sister, but they had already flown away the day before. He did not have confidence in his wings. His family members encouraged him very much, but they failed. His parents played many tricks on him. Sometimes they flew away from the ledge and left him alone. He came out and tried to flap his wings, but his fear seized him and again he went inside. His parents threatened him to die of hunger and did not feed him for a few days. Even then he could not gather the courage for flying. But this trick worked and he tried to make his first attempt. Soon he started flying. He was very happy. He was screaming with joy. He was feeling it as a victory over his fear.

Douglas' experience at the YMCA pool had a far reaching effect on him. It left him weak and terrified. It haunted him till later in life. It ruined his fishing trips and deprived him of the joy of canoeing, boating, and swimming. He was never able to go back into water again. He tried to avoid it whenever he could, but whenever he went to a pool, the terror that seized him in the pool would come back. His legs would become paralysed. Icy horror would grab his heart. This handicap stayed with Douglas for years.
Finally, one October, he decided to employ an instructor and learn to swim. The instructor gradually built a swimmer out of Douglas by making him practice five days a week, an hour each day. He taught him the techniques with the help of a cable and also taught him to breath underwater. To remove his residual doubts about his fear of water, Douglas went up the Conrad Creek Trail to Meade Glacier and swam across to the other shore and back. He then shouted with joy after finally having conquered his fear.

When Mandela realized that the freedom of every black-skinned person on his land was curtailed like his, he was deeply moved. Now the desire of getting freedom was not restricted to himself but had grown to a wider perspective of getting freedom for all. His hunger for freedom became keener and keener. He desired that his people should lead a life of dignity and self-respect. Consequently, he joined the African National Congress. He wanted both the oppressor and the oppressed to be liberated.
