Lencho was a farmer. He was not so poor and not so rich farmer. He was having a great faith in God. This we came to know from his letter addressed to God. He did so for the compensation of his crops. Actually the hail stones destroyed his crops and he thought that now his family would starve throughout the whole year. But he was very religious person, so he decided to ask the God for his help. In his letter to God he asked the God for 100 pesos. But his letter was not reached to God. It were the post office employees who sent the 70 pesos for help. And Lencho called the post office employees as “a bunch of crooks”. While they helped him. Because of this we can say that Lencho was a foolish person too (in the sense of innocence).

In Bholi’s life, love and encouragement made the impossible possible. Her story showed how, after the teacher handed over the key of education to her, she was able to unlock the door that confined her to the stereotypes and expectations yet lack of appreciation or recognition that the society has imposed on women. Bholi’s excellent character is seen when she expresses her desire to serve the very parents who treated her with disdain as long as she could remember. Also, she was ready to married the unprincipled Bishambernath so as to not go against her parents’ wishes and to protect his dignity. When she saw that the greedy and unruly Bishambernath, her prospective husband was charging her father for upholding his dignity, Bholi decides that her family does not need such an unworthy relationship. Because of her education, she was bold enough to protest and make her own decision as to how she would lead her life and support her parents. Her protest is seen by the society as her insolence. Her character deemed it fit to ignore them. Also, a contrast is seen when Bholi’s sisters become envious of their sister’s rich prospective husband while Bholi refused that so called ‘luck’ because she knew that a person was to be judged by his character and not his wealth.

Ironically, Bholi was sent to school as her mother believed she was a burden and let the teachers at the school worry for her. The teacher showed affection and encouraged her to shed her fear. She was assured by her teacher that she would speak like others one day.
Years of hard work transformed Bholi into a bold and confident young woman. Bishamber refused to marry Bholi due to her appearance and demanded five thousand rupees. Bholi saw how her father was humiliated for no reason. She refused to marry a greedy, mean and contemptible coward. She assured her father that she would serve him and her mother in their old age. She had a mission in her life; she would spread the light of education in her village.

Bholi's mother was an orthodox village woman. She was against the idea of sending her daughters to school. She thought that education would affect their marriage prospects adversely. She thought that education would ruin the marriage prospects of their daughters but Bholi was a simpleton. There was no possibility of her marriage.

Bholi never knew anything about school. When her father suddenly caught her by the hand, she was frightened because she thought she would also be sold as her old cow, Lakshmi. When she saw that she got to wear decent clothes and got well groomed, she felt that she was going to a better place than her home.

Bholi's teacher played an important role in changing the course of her life. She was polite and friendly which touched her heart. She encouraged her every time and was affectionate towards her. The teacher transformed her into a confident person who could read, write and speak clearly. This gave her the required confidence. Moreover, teacher’s appreciation and encouragement helped her overcome her low morale.

The story ‘The Hack Driver’ is the story of a hack driver called Oliver Lutkins. He lived at New Mullion. He was an important witness in a court case. The law firm wrote many letters to him but he did not appear before the court. At last, the firm sent a young lawyer to New Mullion to issue summons to Lutkins. The junior assistant clerk did not recognise Lutkins. Lutkins met him at the station. He took the assistant clerk all over the town in search of Lutkins although he himself was Lutkins. He could not serve the summons to Lutkins. He had to return back to the city. But the owner of the legal firm sent him back to New Mullion. He could serve the summons to Lutkins this time`The Hack Driver’ is the story of a very cunning manipulator Bill (Oliver Lutkins). It also shows that appearances are often deceptive. Once, the narrator, a junior clerk in a law firm, had to go to New Mullion to serve a summon to Oliver Lutkins. There he met Bill (Oliver Lutkins), the hack driver. When the narrator asked about Oliver Lutkins, Bill took him to Fritz who replied that Oliver had been there a little while ago. Bill, who was Oliver Lutkins himself, made a plan to befool the narrator. In a very friendly but subtle way, Bill manipulated the tour, taking the lawyer around the village. He arranged meetings with Fritz, Gustaf’s shop owner, a barber etc. Then Bill took him to Oliver Lutkins’ mother who was a terrible, huge woman who threatened to beat them. At last, he returned disappointed. He couldn’t trace Oliver Lutkins. His boss rebuked him badly and asked him to go back to New Mullion with a person who knew Lutkins. When they reached there, he found Bill and Lutkins’ mother together. The man recognised Lutkins. He told that Bill no one but Lutkins himself.

Lomov was a young, unmarried man of thirty five. He was anxious to get married as he had already reached a critical age. So he decided to propose a girl in the neighbourhood. Her name was Natalya, a girl of twenty-five years old. Lomov thought that she was a good housekeeper and was not bad looking. Further she was unmarried. Lomov was a funny character. He was suffering from palpitation. He behaved as if he were eccentric. He was so eager to marry Natalya. But when he came to propose to her, he started quarrelling over trifles. He quarreled on issues like Oxen Meadows and pet dogs named Squeezer and Guess. He even abused Natalya and her father Chubukov while quarreling.

Amanda was living in both , in reality as well as in imagination. She wasn't paying much attention to what her elders was saying. She was physically present but mentally absent. Though it might seem as if she was living in reality but actually she didn't pretty much pay attention to what was happening. She was in her own imagination. Either in sea, or in Rapunzel's place, etc... She just wanted to be free so that no one could control her and she could do whatever she wanted to do .
