The story 'The Necklace' teaches us many lessons which form the crux of human values. The very first thing it teaches us is the need to be content in life. Matilda, though born into a family of clerks and married to a petty clerk with the Board of Education, remains unhappy. She suffers from the feeling that she is born for all delicacies and luxuries, but has to live miserably in 'poverty'. So, when she has to attend the office party with her husband, she asks him for money to get a new dress. Her husband sacrifices the money he has saved to buy a gun to get her the dress. Then also she is not content. She feels that she could look still more beautiful with a jewel. She thus borrows a necklace from her friend, thinking that it is made of diamonds. At the party, she remains elegant, gracious, smiling and absolutely happy. She was thus the prettiest of all. But this vanity is short-lived and is the beginning of all troubles in her life. She loses the necklace and she gets a new diamond necklace as its replacement by borrowing heavily. Subsequently, she is pushed to live in poverty as she slogs for ten years to save money to pay back the huge debt. Then the horrible reality frightens her. She realizes how her false pride has taken away her otherwise happy contented life. The story thus discusses the negative effects of pride and vanity and stresses the importance of being satisfied with what one has honesty, love and sacrifice.

During her first bus journey, Valli was full of enthusiasm and excitement. She enjoyed the landscape, the canal, palm trees, distant mountains and green fields stretching out as far as her eye could see. She reacted strongly when she was called ‘a child’ or ‘madam’. The self-respecting girl refused to accept a free cold drink offered by the bus conductor. She planned her bus journey during the nap hours of her mother. The young seagull had not eaten anything since a long time. Hisq hunger was only intensified when he saw his mother tearing a piece of fish just the way he loved to do. This sight absolutely maddened him and he was ready to do anything to satisfy his hunger. It was this irresistible hunger that compelled the young seagull to fly. His mother had flown towards him with a piece of fish but halted almost within reach of his beak. Maddened by hunger, he leapt at the fish completely forgetting his fear of flying.

It is absolutely true age is not a barrier when it comes to doing something different and great. Valli is a perfect example of this. She proved even people at young age can achieve much.

Once we decide to achieve something, so many difficulties come in our way. With focused attention we can make that achievement. Valli achieved her goal using the same formula. Valli showed extraordinary courage in taking a bus journey all alone. She saved each penny she got; she made the plan for the journey in her mind time and time again.

After she had saved enough money for the journey, she ventured out. She had never gone to the town ever, yet she had the courage to get on the bus alone. She was greatly thrilled with the bus journey and enjoyed the views from the moving bus. Finally, she returned home well in time, without arousing any suspicion.

She could fulfill her dream only because she had the courage and ability do so.

Finally, it can be said that if one wants to achieve one's goals in life, he/she should have Valli-like zeal and passion for his/her goals.

But when lencho got the letter and count money, he got angry as there is absence of remaining 30 pesos and predicted that it was stole by office employees and called them a bunch of crooks
