Postmaster’s character
The postmaster at the post-office was an ordinary man having qualities which usually postmen and village schoolmasters have. His usual facial expression was sadness; there was not a trace of any shine or cheerfulness in his features. We can say his face was as inexpressive as a pumpkin. He had dual personality. We saw him behaving insensitively and indifferently to Ali before he himself went through Ali-like pain and suffering. However, after going through the pain of separation from his own daughter, his arrogance was completely transformed into sympathy for Ali. Now he empathized with him. He wondered he could not bear the suspense concerning his daughter's health only for one night, and how Ali must have gone through the painful suspense concerning his daughter, Miriam, for five years! He felt remorseful for his misbehavior. Coincidentally, when he saw Miriam's letter addressed to Ali, he picked it up excitedly thinking he would hand over the letter to Ali himself. Thus, we see the postmaster as a man who evolves from callousness to empathy.

Laxmi Das was a clerk in the post office where Ali went daily. All the employees made fun of Ali but Laxmi Das was a little kind to him. Ali gave him some coins and told him to bring the letter to his grave if he came after Ali's death. And Laxmi Das kept his word by informing the post master about it and then both of them took the letter to the grave.

Mr. Jefferson was a talented actor who later became a friend of Helen Keller. She first saw Mr. Jefferson as a stage actor when she was living in New York City. Helen saw him in the play Rip Van Winkle, where he played the role of the title character. According to Helen, his performance was charming and she thought that he played his character marvellously. After the performance, when Anne Sullivan took Helen backstage, she met Mr. Jefferson. He was patient when Helen touched his face. They soon became friends. He once visited Helen while in Boston with his son. He re-enacted parts of a play for Helen so she could "follow his movements with her hand." Mr. Jefferson was clearly a compassionate and patient man with a great deal of sympathy and interest which helped Helen with her love of the theatre.

Answer as per this extended question.
How does Mrs Slater plan to outshine the Jordans? What does it reveal about her character?
Ans. Mrs Slater has managed to procure a black dress for mourning, though it is not complete. She believes that her mourning outfit would still be better than Mrs Jordans, who might not have managed to arrange it also. Her obsession for a mourning dress reveals that she is a frivolous and pretentious woman who is not distressed at the death of her father and is bothered more about worldly pretensions.
