सांप्रदायिकता एक ऐसी स्थिति है जब एक विशेष समुदाय अन्य समुदायों की लागत पर अपने स्वयं के हित को बढ़ावा देने की कोशिश करता है।
सांप्रदायिक राजनीति इस विचार पर आधारित है कि धर्म सामाजिक समुदाय का प्रमुख आधार है । सांप्रदायिकता में निम्नलिखित पंक्तियों के साथ सोच शामिल है:
- किसी विशेष धर्म के अनुयायियों का संबंध एक समुदाय से होना चाहिए।
- उनके मौलिक हित समान होने चाहिए। कोई भी अंतर जो उनके पास हो सकता है, सामुदायिक जीवन के लिए अप्रासंगिक या तुच्छ है।
- सांप्रदायिकता यह भी मानती है कि विभिन्न धर्मों का पालन करने वाले लोग एक ही सामाजिक समुदाय के नहीं हो सकते। यदि विभिन्न धर्मों के अनुयायियों में कुछ समानताएं हैं, तो ये सतही और सारहीन हैं। उनके हित अलग-अलग होने और एक संघर्ष में शामिल होने के लिए बाध्य हैं।
- कभी-कभी, सांप्रदायिकता इस विश्वास की ओर ले जाती है कि विभिन्न धर्मों से संबंधित लोग एक राष्ट्र के भीतर समान नागरिक के रूप में नहीं रह सकते हैं। या तो उनमें से एक को बाकी पर हावी होना है, या उन्हें अलग-अलग राष्ट्र बनाने हैं।

- The Napoleon Civil Code of 1804 did away with all privileges based on birth and established equality before the law.
- Secured the right of property.
- Abolished the feudal system and freed peasants from serfdom and manorial dues.
- Napoleon simplified administrative divisions;
- In the towns, guild restrictions were removed.

यूरोप में राष्ट्रवाद का उदय: उन्नीसवीं सदी के मध्य तक यूरोपीय देशों का रूप वैसा नहीं था जैसा कि आज है। विभिन्न क्षेत्रों पर अलग-अलग वंश के लोग राज करते थे। इन इलाकों में राजतंत्र का शासन हुआ करता था। उस काल में कई ऐसे तकनीकी परिवर्तन हुए जिनके कारण समाज में अभूतपूर्व बदलाव आये। समाज में आये इन परिवर्तनों ने लोगों में राष्ट्रवाद की भावना को जन्म दिया।
नये राष्ट्रों के निर्माण की प्रक्रिया 1789 में शुरु होने वाली फ्रांस की क्रांति के साथ शुरु हो गई थी। लेकिन किसी भी नई विचारधारा की तरह राष्ट्रवाद को भी अपनी जड़ जमाने में लगभग एक सदी लग गया। इस लंबी प्रक्रिया के अंतिम चरण में फ्रांस का एक प्रजातांत्रिक देश के रूप में गठन हुआ। उसके बाद यह सिलसिला यूरोप के कई अन्य देशों में भी चलने लगा। बीसवीं सदी की शुरुआत आते आते विश्व के कई हिस्सों में आधुनिक प्रजातंत्र की स्थापना हुई।
