The word “monsoon" came from the Arabic word for “season," and this makes sense since monsoons are seasonal changes in winds that bring drastic changes in weather patterns every year.

Monsoon is usually used to refer to torrential rain, it actually describes the rains and the winds that bring them, as well as the corresponding dry season that follows.

Adolf Hitler's rise to power began in Germany in September 1919 when Hitler joined the political party known as the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei – DAP (German Workers' Party). The name was changed in 1920 to  commonly known as the Nazi Party.Adolf Hitler rose to a place of prominence in the early years of the party. Being one of the best speakers of the party, he told the other members to either make him leader of the party or he would never return. He was aided in part by his willingness to use violence in advancing his political objectives and to recruit party members who were willing to do the same. The Beer Hall Putsch in November 1923 and the later release of his book Mein Kampf (Translation: My Struggle) introduced Hitler to a wider audience. In the mid-1920s, Hitler participated as a speaker and organizer.

Hitler's "rise" can be considered to have ended in March 1933, after the Reichstag adopted the Enabling Act of 1933 in that month. President Paul von Hindenburg had already appointed Hitler as Chancellor on 30 January 1933 after a series of parliamentary elections and associated backroom intrigues.

  • Acute shortages of grain supplies and outdated mode of production on small land holdings led Stalin to introduce the system of collectivisation.
  • Under collectivisation, land was taken away from peasants, Kulaks eliminated and large state controlled farms established. Peasants were forced to cultivate on these collective farms (Kolkboz).
  • Large size of farms enabled introduction of modern techniques and machinery. Land and implements were transferred to the ownership of the collective farms. A profit of the farms was to be shared among the peasants.
  • Many peasants resisted collectivisation. Resistance was severely punished. Many peasants were deported or exiled.
  • Collectivisation however did not lead to increase in production immediately.

Stalin’s plan was to join small farms into huge collectives, called Kolkhoz. The key features of these Kolkhoz were:

  • Peasants would farm the land, using machinery from the state [ Tractors loaned from Motor Tractor Stations (MTS) ]
  • Animals and tools were to be pooled together
  • They would receive a wage for doing this
  • 90% of the produce would be sold to the state cheaply
  • The 10% surplus was to feed the Kolkhoz - it could not be sold privately for profit
  • Peasants could keep a small plot of land around their house for their own use
