The three main features of the Ganga river system are:
- The length of the Ganga is over 2525 km. It is India’s longest river.
- It has many tributaries which join it from both North and South to form the Ganga river basin. It has a dendritic drainage pattern.
- The Ganga originates from the Gangotri glacier. The headwaters of the Ganga is called 'Bhagirathi'. It joins Alaknanda at Devaprayag in Uttarakhand. At Haridwar, the Ganga emerges from the mountains onto the plains.
