Democracies are more prosperous than others is not a good argument in favour of democracy as there are many countries such as Sri Lanka, India which opted for democracy but not prosperous where other countries such as China or Saudi Arabia which have communist and monarchy rule respectively are more prosperous. The prosperity of any country depends on the correct policies of government. It also depends on the availability of natural resources not with the form of government. Democracy cannot guarantee prosperity.

Since its independence in 1980, Zimbabwe has been ruled by ZANU-PF, the party that led the freedom struggle. Its leader, Robert Mugabe, has been ruling the country since then. Elections have been held regularly and always won by ZANU-PF. President Mugabe is popular but also uses unfair practices in elections. Over the years his government has changed the constitution several times to increase the powers of the President and make him less accountable. Opposition party workers are harassed and their meeting disrupted. Public protests and demonstrations against the government are declared illegal. There is a law that limits the right to criticize the President. Television and radio are controlled by the government and give only the ruling party's version.

The ideas of liberty and democratic rights were the most important legacy of the French revolution. These spread from France to the rest of Europe during the nineteenth century, where feudal systems were abolished. Colonised people reworked the idea of freedom from bondage into their movements to create a sovereign nation-state. Tipu Sultan and Rammohan Roy are two examples of individuals who responded to the ideas coming from Revolutionary France.

The Weimar Republic was politically weak due to some inherent defects in its constitution. One was proportional representation which made the achieving a majority by any one party a near impossible. Thus, leading to a rule by coalitions. Another was Article 48 which gave the President the power to impose an emergency, suspend civil rights and rule by decree. The Weimar Republic saw the formation of 20 different cabinets lasting on an average of 239 days. Despite all this, the Economic Crisis couldn't be controlled and thus the people lost faith in the Weimar Republic.

  1. Sovereign: It means that India is a free or independent country. It is not controlled by any foreign power and they are not allowed to interfere in any of the internal or external affairs of the country. This implies that it is free to formulate any of its domestic and foreign policies.
  2. Democratic: This implies that political power is vested in the people. The people of India have the power to elect the government of their choice at all levels - Union, State and Local. Thus, our government is called a democratic government because it is a ‘Government of the people, by the people, for the people’.
  3. Republic: This means that our country has an elected Head of State, the President. He is elected directly or indirectly for a period of five years. However, such a Head has no hereditary right.
  4. Socialist: This term was added in the Constitution by the 42nd Amendment Act of 1976. It implies that the State will ensure an equitable distribution of wealth among its people. Proper measures would be taken to safeguard and protect the interests of the poorer and weaker sections of society. Also, it aims to provide equal opportunities to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor.

In the countryside, there were rumours that the landlords of the manor had hired criminals to destroy the ripe crops of the peasants. Being afraid of the situation, peasants in several districts seized hoes and pitchforks and attacked chateaux (castles belonging to the noblemen). They looted the hoarded grain. They also burnt down documents containing records of the manorial dues. As a result, a larger number of nobles fled from their home towns and migrated to neighbouring countries.
