Newton's first law of motion states that an object remains in a state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change that state by an applied force. In other words, all objects resist a change in their state of rest or motion.
In a qualitative way, the tendency of undisturbed objects to stay at rest or to keep moving with the same velocity is called inertia.
This is why, the first law of motion is also known as the law of inertia.
Example1:  We tend to remain at rest with respect to the seat until the driver applies a braking force to stop the motorcar due to the inertia of motion.
Example2:  The dust particles fly away from the blanket when we jerk it due to the inertia of rest.

Chahat Agarwal 7 years, 6 months ago

The temperature of a substance remains constant during its melting point. This is because the substance uses latent heat of fusion to overcome force of attraction between particles of solids to change into liquid during melting, so the latent heat of vaporization overcomes force of attraction. Therefore the temperature of the substance remains constant

Janesh Verma 7 years, 6 months ago

Because the heat absorbed is used in changing temprature.

Pressure = Force/Area
If the area is more, the pressure is less.
So if tower have wide foundations, they do not sink under the high pressure of tower.

  4. The gravitational force between two particles is independent of presence or absence of other particles.
  5. It is a conservative force, i.e., the work done in moving a particle once around a closed path under the action of gravitational force is zero.

We tend to remain at rest with respect to the seat until the driver applies brakes to stop the bus. With the application of brakes the bus slows down but our body tends to continue in the same state of motion because of its inertia and we tend to fall in the forward direction.
