In the atmosphere oxygen is found in two forms:
i. Diatomic molecule having two oxygen atoms (O2) and found in the lower regions of the atmosphere.
ii. Triatomic molecule having three oxygen atoms (O3) also called as ozone and is found in the upper regions of the atmosphere.
Unlike the normal diatomic molecule of oxygen, ozone is poisonous but it absorbs harmful radiations from the Sun and prevents them from reaching the surface of the Earth. Recently it was discovered that this ozone layer was getting depleted.
Ozone depletion is caused by certain chemicals called ozone depleting substances. They include chlorofluoro carbons, methyl bromide, nitrogen oxides and chlorine.
Effects of ozone depletion:
(i) Skin cancer.
(ii) Damage of eyes.
(iii) Damage of immune system.
(iv) Decreased crop yields.

Preventive measures ensure that the crop plants are protected from the harmful biotic factors (such as diseases, weeds and insects) and abiotic factors (such as drought and salinity). Biotic and abiotic factors can cause huge losses of food grains and need proper treatment to control them. So it is better to take preventive measures and avoid loss in crop plant production.
Using chemical control methods is not advisable since their use creates problems. They are poisonous to plant and animal species and cause environmental pollution. They reach human beings through the food chain. On the other hand, biological control methods are safe for plants, animals, humans and the environment in general.
Hence, preventive measures & biological control methods are preferred for protecting crops.

Vacuum is empty space, devoid of any mater, particles and even air. Vacuum is a state which is referred to being complete emptiness. For example - the outer space is a near perfect vacuum.
Sound is a mechanical wave and mechanical waves are propagated by the oscillation of molecules in a medium like, air, water or gas. There are no molecules in the vacuum to produce oscillations. So sound cannot travel through vacuum.

The phenomenon of repetition of a sound due to its reflection from the surface of a large obstacle is termed as echo.
For example, when a loud sound is produced in an empty hall, the same sound is heard again after some time.
To produce an echo, the conditions required a are:
(i) There should be sufficient time gap between original and reflected sounds. So, if we want to hear distinct echo, the reflected sound must reach the ear 0.1 s after the direct original sound.
(ii) The distance between the source of sound and the obstacle should be sufficient. An echo will be heard distinctly if the minimum distance between the source of sound and the obstacle is 34.4/2 = 17.2 m.
(iii) Nature of the obstacle plays an important role. For the formation of echo, the reflecting surface must be rigid such as a building, hill or a cliff.
(iv) Size of the obstacle should be quite large for the echoes to be heard.

1. Average speed is a scalar quantity, while average velocity is a vector quantity.
2. Average speed takes into account the total distance traveled, while average velocity is concerned with the displacement between two points.
3. In average velocity, direction is expressed.
4. More often than not, the values will differ, with average speed usually having the higher value.
5. Average velocity can be equal to zero, even when the body has completed a traveling motion, as long as the destination point is back at the origin. In this case, the average speed will always have a greater value.

The number of electrons gained, lost, or shared by an atom to complete its octet is called the combining capacity or valency of that atom Phosphorous on using its 3 electrons can form PCl3 . If it will use its 5 electrons then it can form PCl5. Hence it can show both 3,and 5 valency.
