  1. Most of the alpha particles passed through the gold foil without getting deflected.
  2. Very few particles were deflected from their path by 180o indicating that the whole mass of the atom is present in its centre in a very small volume.
  3. Few particles were deflected at small angles from their path and very few were deflected from their path by 180o indicating that the positive charge of the atom occupies very little space and is located at the centre.

The cells that you observed in the above activity are the basic building units of the onion bulb. The cells of onion peel are linear or rectangular in shape. All the cells are firmly bound together. Like onion, all organisms are made up of cells. Some organisms are made up of one cell while others are made up of many cells.

The Rutherfords atomic model is that the he experiment on a-ray Rutherford bombarded a-ray (helium nucleus) upon thin gold foil

Chandru M.Chandru 5 years, 5 months ago

The atom, as described by Ernest Rutherford, has a tiny, massive core called the nucleus. The nucleus has a positive charge. Electrons are particles with a negative charge. Electrons orbit the nucleus. The empty space between the nucleus and the electrons takes up most of the volume of the atom

Potential energy is the work done to take a body to a certain height. For a body with mass m, h is the distance to which it is raised and g is the gravitational force acting on the body, then work done W is given as:

W = force * displacement

W = mg * h

∴ W = mgh

As the work done is equal to mgh which is gained by the object, potential energy Ep is given as:

Ep = mgh
