Features of Poverty in India:

  • Poverty is more in rural areas than in the urban areas of the country.  The main reason for poverty is overpopulation and underemployment.
  • The increasing prices of the commodities and low per capita income are the reason for poverty in India.
  • Due to the high level of poverty, there is an increase in illiteracy and unemployment.
  • There was a major fall in the poverty line from 1977-78, and 1983-84.
