Sample entry
Saturday, 9th September, 2017 8 pm
I turned 14 yesterday and my parents made sure that it was a memorable experience. They threw a huge birthday party. All of my friends and relatives had been invited. While the party was supposed to start at 6 pm, my friends started arriving in the afternoon itself. I wore a lovely pink frock which my mother had bought for me. Everyone congratulated me on my dress and I felt like a princess.
The party began with me cutting the huge chocolate cake. The cake was so large that we all had plenty to eat. Some of my friends sang and some of them danced. I also hit the dance floor. Once the singing and dancing was over, we ate dinner. My mother had made sure that all my favourite dishes were included in the menu. It was well-past midnight when the party ended. Everybody gave me nice gifts and wished me happy birthday. I felt so happy and grateful.

A diary entry has no fixed format or style of writing. However, a good diary entry does contain the following features:
- A good diary writing contains the place, the date, the day and even the time of writing. For example:
Agra
20th July, 20XX
Friday, 8:00 p.m. - A diary doesn’t need any formal heading. However, it is optional. If you want, you can give a suitable heading.
- The style and tone is generally informal and personal. However, it depends on the subject. Sometimes the tone can be philosophical and reflective too. You can freely express your viewpoints and feelings.
- As the diary is writer’s personal document, the diary entry doesn’t need any signature. It is totally optional.
- You can evolve your own suitable style depending on the topic of your writing.

The movement of the snake is very graceful and elegant. The snake does not stick to one straight path but wends its way in and out of the path. At last, the snake floats over the water and hides itself into the green reeds.

Answer
From: [email protected]
To: [email protected]
Date: 3 Arne 2016
Subject: Enjoyment at adventure camp
Dear friend,
How are you? I got your mail that your family has dropped the idea for the vacation to the hill station due to illness of your brother. Do you have any new plans to spend your vacations or thinking about that? I can understand your frustration over the issue. However, I have a better idea.
I have got myself enrolled in an adventure camp and would like you too to come along. Last year, 1 had visited the same camp and had a lot of fun. We participated in the activities like trekking, rafting, rock climbing etc. In the beginning, I was a bit nervous but the team leader motivated me to carry on. These activities inculcated team spirit in me. The thrills of adventure sports will remain with me forever.
I want to feel this type of enjoyment every year so i decided to join this camp every year. Please let me know if you want to come with me. I am waiting for your reply.
Regards,
Raj

In fear the parents ran away leaving them behind in the hands of fate. Many days passed, the brothers survived on the food that was left. When the army was searching the houses to ensure no one was left behind, the soldiers found the brothers in a piteous condition. The soldiers had pity on them and spared their lives.

My Childhood is an extract taken from the autobiographical novel, Wings of Fire by APJ Abdul Kalam. Dr Kalam, who was one of the greatest scientists of India and also the 11th President of India gives an account of his childhood days. He talks about the people, the incidents and the experiences that he had during his childhood which shaped his adult life. Although he was bom in a conservative society, his family, his teachers and his friends influenced Dr Kalam in his childhood and he imbibed values of secularism, honesty and discipline. Written in a very modest tone, the extract is very inspirational.

The story opens with Margie writing in her diary about an old book that Tommy had found. Margie was reminded of her grandfather who had once talked about his grandfather who went to an actual school where the students were taught by human teachers.
However, Margie and Tommy lived in the future world,in the year 2157 where education was completely computerized. They did not go to schools. Instead, they had a special study room where a computer taught them. The computer teacher was programmed and adjusted according to the needs of each child. Now and then the computer teacher developed faults which were fixed by a County Inspector.
Both Tommy and Margie wondered at the book found by Tommy in his attic. They wondered at it as they read books on the screen of their computer teacher. Margie felt that the computer teacher was boring; she disliked the mechanical teaching and learning. She also wondered how much fun it would be studying in a school. Studying in a fun way, with other children and that too from a human teacher.
