The Battle of Plassey was fought between the forces of the Nawab of Bengal Siraj-ud-Daulah and the English East India Company, led by Robert Clive. It was fought on 23 June 1757 at Plassey near Murshidabad. A major portion of the 50,000 strong army of the Nawab was controlled by Mir Jafar who was hand in gloves with the British. His men did not join the battle at a crucial time. As a result, the Nawab’s men suffered heavy casualties and he himself left the battlefield after the death of his commander Mir Madan. This was a major blow to the Nawab’s army which was, as a result, easily defeated by the British. Later, the Nawab himself was caught and killed, and Mir Jafar was instituted as the new Nawab of Bengal.

Here CP of one dozen = ₹36

And SP = ₹40

Since SP > CP therefore it is a profit

Profit  = SP - CP

Profit = 40 - 36

         = ₹4

Profit% = (Profit ÷ CP) ×100

= (4 ÷ 36)×100

= 100/9%

Water is the most important natural resource made available by mother earth to the humans. It is essential for existence of life and maintaining ecological balance. Life on earth without water cannot be imagined and history is replete with wars fought between civilizations over water.
Although, earth constitutes 71% of water, only 2.5% of it is fresh water that we use, and we are wasting that too. The fresh water that we use today has probably been around since the beginning of life on earth. The amount of fresh water that the earth holds has remained constant, but the human pollution consuming it has increased manifolds; subsequently, leading to water scarcity. Adequate measure must be taken towards optimal usage of water and methods like rain water harvesting must be implemented in order to ensure future availability of one of the nature’s most valuable resources.

  • Under the ryoti system, Indigo cultivation was done by the ryots. The planters made the ryots to sign a contract or an agreement (satta). Sometimes, they pressurized the village headmen to sign the contract on behalf of the ryots. After signing the contract, the ryots got cash advances from the planters. But after taking the loan, the ryot was committed to grow indigo on at least 25% of his hand holding. Seeds and drills were provided by the planter. The cultivators prepared the soil, sowed the seed and looked after the crop.
  • But the planters bought indigo at low prices and hence the ryots were always in debt trap.
