Role of Raja Rammohun Roy:
- Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a great social and religious reformer. He undertook several social reforms to change the society and worked to uplift the status of women in India.
- It was largely due to his efforts that the practise of 'Sati' was made a crime punishable by law.
- He criticised the 'purdah system', polygamy, discouraged child marriages and advocated the rights of widows to remarry.
- Raja Ram Mohan Roy advocated the liberty of Women. He also told that like the sons, daughters have also their right over parental property.
- He was the advocate of women education.
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar
- Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was extremely affected by the plight of the widows in India, especially in the feudal setup of Bengal.
- Despite widespread disapproval of the orthodox elements in the society, he continued with his efforts to reform this evil. Finally, in 1856, Lord Dalhousie passed the Widow Remarriage Act.
- He also assisted Drinkwater Bethune in founding the first Indian school for girls in Calcutta in 1849. He introduced the study of Western philosophy in the Sanskrit College where he served as the principal and opened as many as five schools for girls.
- Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar also fought against the evil of child marriage and strongly protested against polygamy.
