Soil erosion is defined as the wearing away of topsoil. Topsoil is the top layer of soil and is the most fertile because it contains the most organic, nutrient-rich materials. One of the main causes of soil erosion is water erosion, which is the loss of topsoil due to water. Running water is the leading cause of soil erosion, because water is abundant and has a lot of power. Wind is also a leading cause of soil erosion because wind can pick up soil and blow it far away. Activities that remove vegetation, disturb the ground, or allow the ground to dry are activities that increase erosion.

The 4 R principle is:
4R means Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Restore
Reduce - We must reduce the use of resources as much as possible and save them for the future generation. Reducing the usage is a method of conservation of resources.
Reuse - Resources can be reused wherever possible. We need not produce resources on large scale which may lead to exploitation of natural resources. Instead we can reuse them.
Recycle - Resources can be recycled wherever possible so that they can be used again and again.
Restore - We can restore resources into their original state, wherever possible.

Crops such as grains, vegetables, and fruits are the cultivated plants or agricultural products harvested by people for human or animal consumption as food.
Types of crop:
Different crops grow well in different seasons of the year. Based on the seasons, all the crops are categorized into two main groups:

The growing of kharif crops starts in June-July at the beginning of south-west monsoon because these crops need substantial amount of water. Examples of kharif crops are paddy, maize, millet, soyabean, groundnut and cotton. Such crops are also called summer crops.

Plants are not capable of directly utilizing atmospheric nitrogen. A few bacteria help in converting atmospheric nitrogen into forms that can be used by plants. Plants acquire nitrates from the soil through their roots, and transform them into proteins. When animals feed on these plants, the proteins enter their bodies. Later, when these animals die, the nitrogen compounds inside their bodies break down into ammonia and this process is known as ammonification.
The bacteria in the ammonification process is known as ammonifying bacteria.
