The author found a nineteenth century old roll-top desk which was put up for sale in a junk shop. It was in a very bad condition with several broken pieces as one leg was clumsily mended and scorch marks all down one side.

Mill thought that all Asian societies were at a lower level of civilisation than Europe.
(i)According to his telling of history, before the British came to India, Hindu and Muslim despots ruled the country.
(ii)Religious intolerance, caste taboos and superstitious practices dominated social life.
(iii)British rule, Mill felt, could civilise India.
(iv)To do this it was necessary to introduce European manners, arts, institutions and laws in India.
(v)Mill, in fact, suggested that the British should conquer all the territories in India to ensure the enlightenment and happiness of the Indian people. For India was not capable of progress without British help.

- Take an iron stand with a clamp and a cotton thread of about 65 cm length.
- Tie the thread to the clamp so that it hangs freely as shown in figure.
- At the free end suspend a pan so that weight can be placed in it.
- Add weight one by one till the thread breaks.
- Note down the total weight required to break the thread. This weight indicates the strength of the fibre.
- Repeat the same activity with threads of wool, silk and nylon.
- You will observe that the weight required to break the threads of wool, silk and^nylon is more than cotton. So, synthetic fibres are stronger than cotton.

Preparation of soil: Preparation of the soil involves loosening and turning it. This has the following advantages:
(i) Loose soil has a lot of air trapped in it, which is used by the roots to breathe easily.
(ii) Loose soil helps the growth of earthworms and microbes in the soil. They provide nutrients to the soil and aid in further loosening of the soil.
(iii) Turning and loosening of soil brings nutrient-rich soil to the top. Plants can then absorb these nutrients more efficiently. The process of loosening and turning the soil is called tilling or ploughing. It is carried out by using a wooden or iron plough which is pulled either by animals or by tractor.
