The earth surrounded by a layer of air. Air has weight and it exerts pressure on the earth's surface. The pressure exerted by the atmosphere on the surface of the earth is called the atmospheric pressure.Atmospheric pressure varies from place to place. Atmospheric pressure decreases with increasing elevation. Moist air exerts less pressure as it contains less nitrogen and oxygen than dry air and is less dense.
