When petrol is dropped on the road during a rainy day, a thin layer of oil will appear on the water surface. Both the top and bottom surfaces of this oil film can reflect light. The wavelength corresponding to the constructive interference also differs and this causes the reflected light to have various colours. When a thin film of oil spreads over the surface of water and it is seen in broad day light, brilliant colours are seen. There colours arise due to interference of sun-light reflected from the upper and lower surfaces of the film. While bending of light rays at curvatures of obstacles, is called diffraction.
