It is important to separate religion from state because of the following reasons.
1) It is important for a country to function democratically. Almost all the countries of the world will have more than one religious group living in them. The tyranny of the majority and the violation of Fundamental Rights can be very harmful for the people belonging to minority.
2) Another reason behind separating religion from the state is that in democratic societies we need to protect the freedom of individuals to exit from their religion, embrace any other religion or have the freedom to interpret religious teachings differently.
3) It is important to separate religion from the stop the domination of one religious community over other.
